THE CRACK OF DAWN Dawn in the early light, waiting for the Supercenter doors to open, unbrushed pony tail trapped like a dead rat in her plastic snap back MAGA cap, stars and stripes shorts riding up her ass crack, sweet hint of a festering biome below a Confederate tee. Topping off a cartful of carbs and nitrates, Bar S franks, Great Value mac and cheese, Fruity Pebbles for the tow-headed toddler asleep in a muscle shirt and blooming diaper, involuntarily sweating on a panting mutt, locked in the beater’s smoky backseat with the windows cracked. The prices feel higher this week than last and some salty snacks have got to go back but the President says groceries are actually down a hundred percent or more. He’s doing all he can for us so she knows she really shouldn’t complain, and she’s saving all her threats and vitriol for the nosy strangers in the parking lot peering into the car and debating whether to crack the glass, livestream to Insta, or speed dial 911.
