OPT provides short-term work visas for recent international graduate students in the US, allowing them to work after their student visa expires. It's a pipeline for jobs in medicine, biomedical research, education, technology, engineering, and other highly skilled work.
This is very, very, bad.

Anyone in the wildlife ecology world in need of a good data analyst/ lab/ project manager or someone to help polish up those outstanding pubs? I have a brilliant graduating MS student looking.

So emotional seeing my first-ever teaching evaluations! π Creating all the materials from scratch was tough, but incredibly rewarding.
I put a lot of thought into what students need in the AI eraβsharing the complete class materials here in case they're helpful: clsong.github.io/EEB_C234/01_...

The 2025 March Mammal Madness bracket
March Mammal Madness fans, good news! @natickbobcat.bsky.social created a Starter Pack of folks involved in #2025MMM. I also converted it into a Bluesky List so you have both options. Happy species research!

We should all be mad but for some additional context on where to direct the anger Universities and schools received this letter- basically they risk losing all federal funding if they donβt comply with the DEI orders: www.ed.gov/media/docume...
What kind of research do they consider "wasteful DEI"? Reading through the project descriptions (column N) and it's project grants studying:
-fentanyl overdose prevention
-earthquake disaster preparedness
-renewable energy
-kidney disease (and other healthcare topics)
-disability aid product design

How do you get followers on here, post fun bear videos? π»
Lucky enough to visit Antarctica over the holidays and met the best seals- figured Bluesky needed to meet them too
Oh for sure! Itβs much easier to agree to review a paper 3-4 weeks from now- thatβs future Amanda problem vs one due next week
Missed the poll but 21-28 days would be my preference. It takes a bit of time to be able to work it into the schedule
In-line with some Ichthyology/ornithology individuals on here, I want to do 25 days of #BatMas this year!

A seal snoozing in the sunshine on some ice.
Antarctica Day is on Dec 1st each year. It marks the signing of the Antarctic Treaty, which sets aside Antarctica as a continent for peace and science.
To help celebrate, hereβs a photo I took a couple of years ago, of a seal which had clearly got the message about peace.
Happy #AntarcticaDay!!
