I always go with viridis since it’s professionally accepted and easy to implement across different software!

The peer review system is breaking down. Here’s how we can fix it Peer review is so integral to the scholarly system that research would grind to a halt without it.

So many questions after reading this: 🧪

Do you feel these frustrations as an author or editor? ✍️

What’s the longest you’ve had to wait for peer review? ⏰

Does your institution factor peer review into you workload? 😓

Should you be obligated to review? 🤔

What are your biggest academic goals for 2026?

I’ll start: have the last three chapters of my PhD published.

What do stingrays actually eat? New study reveals some only prefer a single type of prawn In stingray nurseries, competition for food can be fierce – and it helps to not be a picky eater.

That moment of pride when your first paper from your PhD got its first citation 🥲

For fun, this is what Google’s AI pulled up when I searched for my paper.

As an academic, what can you claim as tax deductions? Hear me out:
- conference registration/flights
- hard drives and tech
- fieldwork clothing
- subscriptions
- professional development courses
- percentage of your bills for working from home

Check it out.

I found a show called “Dancing with the Sharks” on Shark Week this year. Not only is this unbelievably silly but also dangerous? I wasn’t expecting any real science but this was something else….

My rating of this show: 9/10. The only reason it didn’t get a solid 10 is because my friend didn’t make it to the finals 😭 and there were a few misidentified rays at Heron Island. Go watch this! #allthesharks

You’ve heard the annoyingly catchy song – but did you know these incredible facts about baby sharks? Some baby sharks eat their unborn siblings in utero, while others spend 100 years in childhood. Sink your teeth into the weird world of these juvenile wonders of the deep.

Digging this article out of the archive. How much do you actually know about baby sharks, aside from the catchy song for toddlers?

It’s one of the sad realities why I spent the past five months NOT looking for postdocs in the US. It felt way too risky. But most people don’t have the luxury of looking outside of their country. So what can we honestly expect to do?

How would you respond to this?? I’m perplexed.

I had a conversation recently where I said it was very damaging that the DOGE has sacrificed funding from NOAA to meet short term goals.

Other person: well it has to be cut from somewhere. What does NOAA do anyway?

😖 Help!

Here is another”I’m new to Bluesky” post. Can you experts out there tell me how Bluesky differs from other platforms? So far, it reminds me a lot of Twitter! What content do people hope to see here?

Please appreciate this picture I took of a “blue sky” to pair with this query!

Hi, Bluesky community. This is my first post so here a short blurb about me.

I am a fish biologist with experience in freshwater and marine systems.

I currently live in Australia.

I submitted my PhD thesis on stingray ecology in December 2024. Woo!

My favorite stingray is the Cownose ray.
