Our digitized Lophophorata data (now mostly #bryozoa, some #brachiopoda) are online at GBIF, this is just the beginning! More coming! www.gbif.org/dataset/82e6...
#FossilFriday Eocene bryozoan Biselenaria offa first described by J.W. Gregory (1864–1932). Gregory was a geologist and explorer who published on the African Rift Valley and came close to being the leader of the tragic Terra Nova expedition to Antarctic in which Robert Falcon Scott and others died.
A whooping 26 persons already pre-registered for #bryozoan Larwood 2026! Pls consider pre-registering to help keep costs low! Link to register in quote. Dennis Gordon will be joining us from NZ thx to @uio.no funding! @hardbunnsfauna.bsky.social @glyptocrinus.bsky.social @bryozoology.bsky.social

Meet Harmeria scutulata!
We don't see this species often (or at all) these days. Registered (Norwegian) specimens are pretty much 50-100 years old, and we actually have no recent record of this species here in Norway as far as I know.

#FossilFriday This large slab in the NHMUK covered with screws of the Carboniferous bryozoan Archimedes was unknown to me until last week. For at least 46 years it has been lurking among large specimens in the coral collection.
I wrote a short post about some characters to use when identifying and differentiating between the cyclostome genera Hornera and Stigmatoechos!

🌊 Phylum Friday: Bryozoa! 🌊
These small colonial organisms are usually found encrusting rocks or blending in with algae. However, many of the species found in New England are invasive, and have become a concern for intertidal and subtidal ecosystems as they encrust and out-compete native species.
yes, that is Triticella. That genus/clade is sometimes exclusively on crustaceans, often even their mouth parts. It has been shown that Triticella can synchronize its sexual reproduction to its crustacean host.
A photo of a dead crustacean in ethanol. It is covered by small zooids
A close up of Triticella zooids. Thei have a long "stalk" and then you have the autozooid.
Today's cool museum collection discovery: Bryozoans growing on crustaceans!
I believe this ctenostome belongs to the genus Triticella, which is known to grow on specific groups of marine invertebrates 🦐

Fossilized Bryozoan sea mats and some Crinoid discs. Sea mats are colonial invertebrates that leave behind calcareous skeletons that can look like lace or mesh. These particular fossilized ones are over 300 million years old.
