Another potential new species for Norway! - Natural History Museum Read this story on the University of Oslo's website.

We might have found a new species for Norway, but is it an unknown species, an invasive species or a simply overlooked species? We don't actually know yet 🤔

Gingerbread cookies and their real life counterparts; we have a spiky amphipod (like a shrimp with mohawk), a lugworm (worm with a fat end), a hermit crab whose googly eyes suggest it has forgotten to turn off the stove, a colony of Hydroids, a squid who in gingerbread looks a lot less menacing than IRL, a red worm that in Swedish s named the "red christmasgift-worm" as it looks like a giftwrapped package, and a chonky red sea star. All images by K. Kongshavn, except the live hydroid, which is made by L. Martell. The cookies were made by the fantastic participants on a #NorDigBryo bryozoa workshop

Notoplites evocatus seems to be a species that prefers the deep sea. We have not found too many specimens of this species during our project, but the ones we have found have all been from deep sea samples.

Meet Harmeria scutulata!

We don't see this species often (or at all) these days. Registered (Norwegian) specimens are pretty much 50-100 years old, and we actually have no recent record of this species here in Norway as far as I know.

Today's cool museum collection discovery: Bryozoans growing on crustaceans!

I believe this ctenostome belongs to the genus Triticella, which is known to grow on specific groups of marine invertebrates 🦐

I generally find Crisia a difficult genus to deal with when it comes to separate the different species, but Crisia constans does have some characteristic round gonozooids that makes it possible to identify!

Plenty of different bryozoans from many, many samples have been identified as a part of our #NorDigBryo project, and Celleporina caliciformis is one of them! This species belongs to the family Celleporidae which is a very chaotic (in my honest opinion) group of bryozoans!

Our master student Maria decided to work with cyclostome bryozoans when she first laid her eyes on Coronopora truncata, and it's not hard to see why. It's a pretty elegant cyclostome that kind of looks like a crown, hence the name!
