We might have found a new species for Norway, but is it an unknown species, an invasive species or a simply overlooked species? We don't actually know yet 🤔

It's always nice when we can use museum collections to do research and other projects! Here is an example from Norway with bryozoans from the 50s!

An electron microscope image of Notoplites evocatus
A close up image of the zooids. The long and slender frontal avicularia is noticable.
Notoplites evocatus seems to be a species that prefers the deep sea. We have not found too many specimens of this species during our project, but the ones we have found have all been from deep sea samples.

A photo of two Triticella zooids. One of them has what looks like mini zooids growing out from it
Still finding Triticella-colonies. This zooid has some weird growths/buds 🧐 #artsdatabanken #nordigbryo #bryozoa
Wrote a little thing about Celleporina caliciformis & decipiens and one character you can use to tell them apart! #Bryozoa #NorDigBryo #Artsdatabanken

Glad to have been in Drøbak, #Norway to teach during the workshop on #Laboulbeniales. This was funded through an #Artsdatabanken project, which will hopefully see a continuation.
Preparing my introductory PPT while on my way to Drøbak, Norway to teach a workshop on #Laboulbeniales together with my PhD student Warre Van Caenegem and Dr. Vladimir Gusarov from @uio.no. Funded by #Artsdatabanken. www.forbio.uio.no/events/cours... @prfju.bsky.social #TeamLaboul
I wrote a short post about some characters to use when identifying and differentiating between the cyclostome genera Hornera and Stigmatoechos!

A photo of a bryozoan colony. The surface of the zooids looks like a net or web and they have paired avicularia
A photo of a bryozoan colony. The aperture is taking up much of the zooidal surface and small avicularia are scattered about
Some recent findings from this week! To the left: Cribrilina (Cribrilina) cryptooecium and to the right is what I believe to be Amphiblestrum auritum

Read about invasive #bryozoans in Norway by @malihr.bsky.social www.nhm.uio.no/english/rese... and other supercool finds in her documentation of our #Artsdatabanken funded project NorDigBryo! www.nhm.uio.no/english/rese...
An electron microscopy image of a bryozoan colony. The zooids have many spines, and some zooids have a spherical-looking ovicell.
A close p electron microscopy image of Callopora weslawski, showing the row of additional spines on the lateral wall right under the regular spines
Another cool find during our #NorDigBryo project: Callopora weslawski. It's an Arctic species and is characterized by a row of additional spines on the vertical wall/gymnocyst (second image)

Going to @nordicoikos.bsky.social #OikosNorway2025? We have great signup for our #workshop on how & why #ecologists could & should engage in #science-policy and #scicom, but can fit more, so pls consider joining us!

A scanningelectron microscope image of a bryozoan autozooid, showing the orifice with the pointy lyrula in the middle
One of the more charming species we've found so far during our #NorDigBryo project (in my opinion) is Hinksipora spinulifera. Its pointy lyrula (that "spike" at the poximal side of the orifice) is, again: my opinion, very cute!
