🏋️♂️Our study showed feasibility of a 12-week program combining heavy slow resistance training with patient education in gluteal tendinopathy.

✅ The intervention was safe and feasible, showing promising results that warrant investigation in a RCT.
Just returned from Fukuoka Japan attending the #ISHA2025 Scientific Meeting with great colleagues.
I presented results from the Hip Booster trial, showing that exercise booster sessions are not effective for maintaining effects of exercise in hip OA.

Exercise generally does not increase the breakdown of joints affected by osteoarthritis. However, this has not yet been studied specifically in hip osteoarthritis. Read more – and if you have hip osteoarthritis, you may participate in a scientific study:

on another RCT, showing that stationary biking and education is effective in hip osteoarthritis:

Just published findings in @oacjournal.bsky.social from 1 year follow-up of the Hipbooster RCT, showing that in hip osteoarthritis, 4 additional group exercise sessions were ineffective for improving long-term effects of an initial 3-month intervention.

Thrilled about engagement at our symposium #ExerciseasMedicine at Aarhus University last week. The overall take-away message for me is how exercise impacts trajectories for healthy ageing and for those who live with disease. There are still challenges, one being how to ensure long-term engagement.
Still spots left on the 5th of March for an exciting afternoon at Aarhus University exploring Exercise as Medicine for healthy ageing and disease prevention. Register here (free of charge):

Accumulating evidence suggests that nonsurgical management can play a role before surgery is considered.
Such a strategy carries fewer risks for adverse events and lowers cost without compromising outcomes.

I got lucky and was invited to write a comment for The Lancet Rheumatology: www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...
We discuss evidence gaps in hip OA, propose new avenues for study, and suggest that exercise is still a suitable first-line treatment. Happy to get your 2 cents on these issues.

RFK Jr: As I said, I'm not going into HHS with any preordained--
SANDERS: I asked you a simple question, Bobby
RFK Jr: If you show me those studies ...
SANDERS: That is a very troubling response

Fake or flawed studies are polluting systematic reviews in medicine and other fields - but how do you spot them?

It only took 4 years, but the garbage study that initially claimed hydroxychloroquine could treat COVID19 has been retracted. As with Wakefield’s fraudulent paper falsely tying vaccines to autism, the damage has already been done. It was cited more than 3600 times. www.nature.com/articles/d41...
We found that changes in all 5 measures of physical function were associated with changes in muscle power after supervised exercise in people with hip osteoarthritis.
Objective measures were more closely related to muscle power than subjective ones.
