YAY! Thousands of miles and several weeks later, I finally have a copy of Alison Ballance's book, Kākāpō: Rescued from the Brink of Extinction. She's a hefty tome - can't wait to crack in! 🦜💚📖 #parrots #conservation #wildlife #kakapo

These California Condors Might Be Tending to the Species' First Egg in the State's Northern Region in More Than a Century Experts haven't confirmed the existence of an egg, but the nesting birds' behaviors suggest one was laid in early February

In 1982, there were only 22 individuals left. A captive breeding program has brought that number up to 607. There have already been nests from condors released further south; but this is potentially the first wild condor egg in northern California in 100 years. 🥚

This is the result of YEARS of dedicated efforts by the Aotearoa NZ conservation team. We can't count their chicks before they hatch, or even before they fledge...but it's a wonderful thing to see.

This year, the breeding population of kākāpō has already laid 81 (fertile) eggs and counting. This might not seem like a lot until you remember that in 1995 there were only 51 kākāpō remaining, total.

The flightless #kakapo usually nest underground. Yesterday we found the coolest nest I’ve ever seen: Whetu was 3m above ground in a hollow rata tree. #kakapo2026 #conservation #birds

The kākāpō breeding season is well under way! If you don't know, kākāpō are these amazing giant, flightless, nocturnal parrots in Aotearoa New Zealand that almost went extinct. Dedicated recovery efforts are bringing them back. As you can see here, every nest is being monitored, every egg checked.💚🦜

"'I think these cases may really be pro-social representations of conscious learning where these whales are going out of their way to actually try and understand … who we are and how we might interact with them in their environment,' [Jared] Towers [of Bay Cetology] says."

From Brenna Owens' article in The Canadian Press:

"Sharing food among relatives and other orcas is foundational for the whales, and in attempting to provision humans with prey...it could be an example of the whales practicing a cultural behaviour or exploring humans’ capacity to respond."

I am once again delighted by whale news: orcas have been trying to share their food with humans!

The new study looks at 34 cases of orcas approaching people and offering up bits of meat or whole prey, sometimes repeatedly.

GUYS. You know how orcas have been sinking yachts? HUMPACK WHALES HAVE BEEN APPROACHING PEOPLE AND BLOWING BUBBLE RINGS.

The report says that there have been 12 cases of them doing this during friendly encounters with humans where they appeared "curious"

They're trying to talk to us aaahhhhhhh

One of the best things you can do is be a person that makes other people feel better just by being around them.

It *almost* doesn't matter what you're doing/saying...

If you're connected with your source of joy and power and you have a compassionate heart, believe me, you're doing something. ❤️

Coquí frogs have a two part call (co-QUI) and the nervous systems of nearby males respond to the first part, while females respond to the second part. Just thought people should know. 🐸 #animalbehavior #animalcommunication #frogs

You weren't meant for a 9-5

And you certainly weren't meant to have your biometric data stolen by an authoritarian state and then stored insecurely

just sayin'
