I've recently been to two dance events where I got very nerdy about the kinematics of dance, anatomy of different movements, and even more people not being surprised that I find countless ways to connect my scientific interests into dance π
.
What can I say, I love both!
Movement is fascinating!

A screenshot of a mobile Google search results page in dark mode for the query "Kansas trans". Under the heading "News about Kansas," there is a list of four news articles: βAn article from the Kansas City Star, published 13 hours ago, with the headline "Kansas informs trans residents their driverβs licenses become invalid on Thursday". The thumbnail shows a sample Kansas driver's license. βAn article from The Independent, published 7 hours ago, with the headline "Kansas sends letters to trans drivers demanding the immediate surrender of their licenses over birthright law". The thumbnail shows small pride flags on desks inside a legislative chamber. βAn article from The Topeka Capital-Journal, published 7 hours ago, with the headline "Kansas invalidates IDs and birth certificates of transgender people". The thumbnail features a close-up of colorful pride flag stickers. βAn article from Erin In The Morning, published 16 hours ago, with the headline "Kansas Sends Letters To Trans People Demanding The Immediate Surrender Of Drivers Licenses". The thumbnail is a nighttime photo of a state capitol building illuminated in pink and red lights.
A day later and no major national news org has covered what they're doing in Kansas.
This is the flip side of the hyper focus on trans issues by the right. The national media ignores what's actually being done to trans people.
This erasure is what contributes to the persecution.
Ok, but since then even more of the local dance community have started to learn some small everyday signs to be able to interact with me better in the loud dance rooms ππ
And yes, the CODA and I are friends despite our age gap. Communication transcends age :)
I'm so grateful for this community!
π¨ Requesting help:
I am looking for an agent who can facilitate more speaking gigs, podcast appearances, and interviews with journalists
I want to more widely share my story and expertise as a trans geneticist who understands the reality and complexity of "biological sex" π³οΈββ§οΈπ§¬
Please signal boost?
Requesting an interpreter and not getting one always stings a bit.
Socials in densely packed bars are equally difficult to poster sessions.
I am excited, in this regard, to get back home to an asl community where going out still means we can converse with one another.
A photo of a downloading video showing the progress circle is about a third of the way complete
Once this last video finishes downloading I will also have flow tank videos that ya'll can see at my poster too (of stationary holding in the flow tank).
So, ya'll should definitely stop by!
See everyone soon at the poster session!

Also, I am HoH so I walk around w/ headphones on because I can't hear people talking w/out lip reading in these spaces.
That said...
If you see me: wave, tap my shoulder, and I am *super* happy to meet and chat with people whenever I'm out and about :)!
#SICB2026
Yeah, I try to open mine at home like 12 hours before wearing to let them air out a little from that smell. I haven't been sick yet so I don't think it negatively impacts the filter part of it.
Some people are also born deaf/HoH, have had injuries (like ruptured eardrums) that cause hearing impairment, and so much more!
Inclusion increases the people that can nerd out with you about your science :)
If you're at #SICB2026 I've got a poster this afternoon! Stop on by to chat about how cool #wobbegong #sharks are, #biomechanics, and more!

Happy New Year everyone!
I hope 2026 can bring joy and happiness to people π

Grading and googling hallucinated citations, as one does nowadays, and now that LLMs have been around for a while, I've discovered new horrors: hallucinated journals are now appearing in Google Scholar with dozens of citations bc so many people are citing these fake things
Chatting with a dance friend tonight.
It was a few weeks ago that I realized from Nov to Nov I took basically no time off.
Told him the burnout for Phd's is high and most dream of a bakery back-up.
He immediately said, so yours is a dance bakery
Ya'll!!! The accuracy π
Yes, more data! π lol
I'd love for one of my wobbegong posts to do half the numbers as the bony fish that gets called a shark does π.
It always gets 5k+ likes and/or reposts. People *love* this fish π
An image that is made of two different fish. The one on the left is a very flat fish called a monkfish. The right image is a flat shark called a tasselled wobbegong. Both are flat and sandy brown in color and sit on the floor of the ocean.
Happy #WobbegongWed!
Today is a reminder, because this photo is making rounds again: The #fish on the left is a teleost fish called a monkfish, while the #shark on the right is a tasselled #wobbegong.
Easy to confuse, but the image on the left, I promise, is NOT a wobbegong shark <3.

I too wish there were more documentries about them!
I love them :)

Why was she surprised and grateful that I asked? Why don't people enuinely check in with others even in small ways anymore?
Community is everything and kindness costs nothing. Take care of each other ya'll π€
Today, I saw someone stumble and almost trip.
I immediately asked if she was ok.
She said yes, took a small pause, her facial expression softened and she said, "thank you for asking".
This isn't a 'I'm a good person' post. This is a 'why aren't more people treating others with softness' post.
Spinning my wheels and not making progress is when the joy ends. As long as I'm learning and growing, I love it!
Glad I'm not alone on this π₯°
Why is my version of 'relaxing' just learning non-work related new things? Lol
I'm supposed to be resting, hard to do with walking pnaumonia from a sinus infection, and my version of 'rest' is learning a new language - I'm at elementary level now π
.
Are other people like this too?
I've always lived by the thought that grief is love with no place to go. I'm grieving right now, but it's also hard to give away love when getting out of bed is difficult... I forced myself to put on a smile and go to social dances, hoping it would be my typical dance+music therapy, but still, this week is rough. So, thank you for those who pulled me out of bed, people who have shared dances with me, and the community around me. I see and appreciate you. It helps even if there is still grieving to do and more love to give away π€
I appreciate ya'll π
