I LOVE this video of #Northern #wobbegong #shark!
Many people don't realize how flexible their pectoral fins are or they they can 'walk'!
This video really shows off their ability to navigate in shallow water and their fin use for locomotion.

It's #WobbegongWed! Today's thread is about the cobbler #wobbegong #shark (Sutorectus tentaculatus)!
It is the only species in the Genus Sutorectus. One unique feature is the warty-like tubercles along the back and it's orange/red coloration.

For #WobbegongWed, as far as we know, #wobbegong #sharks reproduce via aplacental viviparity (formerly known as ovoviviparous)!
Aplacental viviparity meant that eggs are formed and hatch in utero then the animal gives birth to a live pup.

For #WobbegongWed, let me introduce you to a lesser known #wobbegong #shark species: Network wobbegong (Orectolobus reticulatus)
In 2015, this species was only known from 4 specimens! (fish.gov.au/docs/SharkRe...)

Today's #WobbegongWed is a thread only because of the number of photos I want to use lol. Inspired by a recent lecture by @astrokatie.com!
Recently, I saw some photos of galaxies, one photo looked similar to this pic of galaxies:

It's #WobbegongWed and I must admit that Instagram has been killing it for amazing #wobbegong #shark videos lately!
So, here's one that I love :)
(I nearly always have videos on mute, so I can't comment on any audio/sound.)

Lol...one day :)
I've been a little busy but you can find wobbegong sharks facts every wed with #WobbegongWed :)
A short #WobbegongWed thread!

We're going to talk a little bit about teeth!
Most carpet #shark species have teeth that can ROTATE which allows them to eat soft prey (like fish and cephalopods) OR hard bodied prey (like shelled bivalves)!

For #WobbegongWed, let me introduce you to my favorite #wobbegong species, at least based on colors!
This cobbler wobbe is a great addition to any fall season under the sea :)

An image that is made of two different fish. The one on the left is a very flat fish called a monkfish. The right image is a flat shark called a tasselled wobbegong. Both are flat and sandy brown in color and sit on the floor of the ocean.
Happy #WobbegongWed!
Today is a reminder, because this photo is making rounds again: The #fish on the left is a teleost fish called a monkfish, while the #shark on the right is a tasselled #wobbegong.
Easy to confuse, but the image on the left, I promise, is NOT a wobbegong shark <3.
I wasn't "known" for anything (account under 2k).
However, when the monkfish photo was posted as a "wobbegong shark" I guess people started to search those words.
I had been doing #WobbegongWed posts for over a year, so I was showing up in the results.
The hate and attacks I got was *so* much lol

For #WobbegongWed, did you know chondrichthyans, including #wobbegong #sharks, are social animals?
Researchers at Macquarie University found that spotted wobbegongs get together in groups based on complex social interactions!

It's #WobbegongWed! Most #wobbegong #sharks reproduce via aplacental viviparity. (We don't know all 12 100%.)
This happens when an egg develops in utero, hatches, and then the shark gives live birth! The pups get nutrients via the egg yolk and from the glands in the oviduct walls.
AI image of a semi-flat fish with lots of thin hairs around the mouth, very protruding eyes on top of the head, and the floor and fish have, what looks like, red kelp laying all over. There are some small fish in the background.
Today's #WobbegongWed post is brought to you by ai misinformation.
This video created a whole ai image of a #wobbegong #shark. Seeing how the last youtube video cause the goosefish fiasco, I'm trying to get ahead here π₯².
This image is *not* a wobbegong shark. (I will post a real one below!)

It's #WobbegongWed, so here's a video of seeing some #wobbegong #sharks swimming around :D
These sharks have mastered camouflage and are handsome to look at!

For #WobbegongWed I'm leaning into wobbe's right now for my thesis so I want to talk about the species I'm working on today: Eucrossorhinus dasypogon or the tasselled wobbegong.
Their habitat range, according to the IUCN website, is the northern half of Australia and around Papua New Guinea

I missed #WobbegongWed yesterday as I was going down multiple rabbit holes of paper after paper, where I wasn't even searching for wobbe's (or Orectolobiformes) and they kept appearing in the papers and book chapters!
So, I want to share a piece of 1 ch of a book as a thread.

For #WobbegongWed, did you know that wobbegong sharks commonly hunt using an ambush style. This means they sit on the ocean floor, wait for prey to come in close, and then use their fins and protruding jaw to capture the prey quickly. Check out the link to see a video of this in action.

For #WobbegongWed:
Wobbegong sharks are opportunistic sharks that largely feed on cephalopods, teleost fishes, and even other sharks!
The ratio of what they eat varies based on the size and habitat of the wobbegong shark.

For #WobbegongWed (#BestShark).
Wobbegong sharks are sit-and-wait ambush feeding predators. This strategy is, surprisingly, rare among sharks and other elasmobranch species. (Theiss et al, 2012).

Trying a short thread for #WobbegongWed! I wanted to highlight the diversity of all chondrichthyans using a wobbegong shark paper example!
In a paper that looked at the mechanosensory lateral line (MLL) in 2 species of wobbegong sharks the researchers found that these 2 species...
