May 2025. Only a handful of souls were out this day at Karekare Beach. The weather was overcast and quite blustery (although in this shot, snippets of blue sky had elbowed their way forward for a bit). To that point, I’d found myself in a low mood, wandering aimlessly - to what purpose, yet again? Why am I still floating around this plane of existence without him? Heading down the southern portion of the beach, there's a section of imposing driftwood, half-buried in the sand, almost like an Elder God had fallen. Its still-upraised arms formed a rambling wooden gate or mystical entryway of sorts, nicely framing a view out to Paratahi Island (formed of dacite and of volcanic origins). I knelt - then sat - in the black sands, and discovered my purpose had been found: if only for the day, the hour, the moment. Be Here Now. Just…Be.

This environmental composition reveals the broader scene: still water mirroring trees along the opposite shore and the curved log that emerges at center-left before dipping back beneath the surface at mid-frame on the right. The symmetry of the log and its reflection, combined with the heron’s form, creates the illusion of a face when viewed to the left—some even see a resemblance to the Grinch from Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
