Severe malaria leaves a long shadow.
Children with cerebral malaria (CM) and severe malarial anemia (SMA) had worse cognitive function & lower academic achievement 4–15 years later 📉
Early injury → long-term impact.
A page from JAMA titled "Long-Term Neurocognitive Outcomes After Severe Malaria Infection No Peace of MIND". The study found that children with cerebral malaria or severe malaria anemia had lower overall cognitive ability scores and math achievement scores.
💬 Editorial: Children surviving cerebral #malaria or severe malarial anemia face long‑term cognitive and academic deficits years after infection, highlighting that the burden of #Malaria extends far beyond hospital discharge.

A new study shows that strain-level surveillance of Staphylococcus aureus in NICUs can identify hidden transmission pathways and enable targeted interventions to reduce serious infections in vulnerable newborns. #IDsky #Medsky

We are recruiting 1-2 postdoctoral fellows to investigate the specificity of human anti-influenza virus antibodies, and to determine how these antibodies impact global antigenic drift of influenza viruses.

PIDS has released a statement on the revised ACIP charter and its attempt to upend US vaccine policy by shifting away from public health and toward misinformation and litigation. Read the full statement at pids.org/2026/04/10/p...

Graph of RSV-associated hospitalizations and ED visits per 100 population. X axis: Respiratory season, y (2022-2023, 2023-2024, 2024-2025). Y axis: Rate. Data shown for age groups <=7 mo and 8-24 mo.
In Washington state, use of infant nirsevimab and antenatal RSV vaccine was associated with a 43% reduction in RSV-associated hospitalizations and emergency visits among infants aged ≤7 months in the second year of implementation. ja.ma/4vhGK3J
Also so relevant for clinical training. The grunt work is the work. I am very efficient at writing notes. Trainees on our teams write notes b/c the writing helps the synthesis come together.
Dr Edwards is a legend who has focused her career on protecting children, while training many of the best and brightest Pediatricians and Pediatric Infectious Diseases specialists.
She is exactly a leader who parents should trust.

I defended my PhD 10 years ago today. That was the least remarkable thing that happened that day. Sharing something I wrote about it last year. Since then "the horrors persist but so do we." And with dignity.
Thank you for sharing, Mariko. I am sure Ben would be so proud of the investigator you have become
Another twist to why newborn babies more vulnerable to infection. Beyond immune cell immaturity, layering, active suppression... maternal pathogen-targeted antibodies still protect. Grateful @Nature sharing this hopefully uplifting glass half (99.9%)-full perspective www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Our @statnews.com survey of NIH-funded researchers drew nearly 1,000 responses from 45 states (plus DC and Puerto Rico). Here's a short thread on 5 scientists' whose labs and lives have been deeply impacted by federal policies 🧵
Read the full statement from AAP President Dr. Andrew Racine on a federal judge's ruling to block key aspects of HHS Secretary RFK Jr’s efforts to upend vaccine policy: www.aap.org/en/news-room...
🚨 BREAKING: A federal judge has ruled in favor of @ameracadpeds.bsky.social and issued a preliminary injunction against the CDC.
The ruling pauses the Jan 2026 childhood immunization schedule revisions, blocks RFK Jr's 13 recent ACIP member appointments, and pauses all votes taken by the committee.
This is kinda bonkers.
In addition, 20 amino acids were found on Ryugu, along with uracil and vitamin B3. These have been found in other instances, but since the samples from Ryugu were collected directly from the asteroid and delivered in sealed capsules, contamination on Earth could be ruled out.
Plot of modeling new NIH grants after a switch to 100% MYF. There is a large drop in grants in the first year with a gradual recovery over 5 years.
There is a lot of talk lately about multi-year funding (MYF) at NIH. This is mostly a paperwork issue, but it can have a dramatic impact on the number of grants that get funded. I was curious how this would impact grant numbers over time, so I did some simple modeling. 1/n
