However, we are looking at ways that skill rating can help to enhance the player experience. This includes things like player onboarding and sorting teams after a match is found.
Also... we just want our matchmaking to be good.
We are being extremely careful regarding player skill rating. Our overall objective with matchmaking is to help players meet new friends.
Forcing a 50% win rate doesn't help us reach that goal. Realistically, it's pretty stressful having to give 100% effort every single match.
In our view, the perfect match isn't just about player skill. Sometimes you just want to goof around, other times you need to give it 100%. Every player is different, and the same player is going to have different goals over time.
The elephant in the room: Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM)
tl;dr We are currently focused on finding matches using match tagging and good connection. We are not currently focusing on SBMM as a means to find matches.
For example: A Polite Social lobby is focused on having fun and being nice to each other.
A Rowdy Competitive lobby will likely feel familiar to those of us that played FPS in the late 2000's/early 2010's.
You'll be able to update these preferences anytime!
Matches will primarily be sorted by two key tags:
- TEMPERAMENT describes the overall politeness of your experience.
- ETHOS determines the level of competition in your lobby.
We have new details on finding matches in RINGFALL!
Match Tagging is how we'll find compelling matches for you, allowing you to find players of a similar mindset and temperament to your own.
We are prioritizing preference above all else.

More HUD progress!
