💡Remote work alone cannot eliminate gender inequalities, but it represents a significant step towards greater labour market inclusion of mothers.
➡️ The results indicate that working from home can meaningfully ease time constraints
faced by mothers, supporting their continued labour market participation and helping to reduce the motherhood employment gap.
🔹 mothers’ working hours also increased in a meaningful way, essentially closing the gap between desired working hours and actual working hours.
🔹 importantly, the results depend on children’s age and household circumstances.
Using data from the EU-LFS and a shift-share IV method, they found that:
🔹 as WFH increased, so did the likelihood of mothers being employed full-time, which led to a 25% decrease of the employment gap between women with- and without children in the EU since the start of the pandemic.
#PATHS2INCLUDE provides the first causal evidence on how the post-Covid expansion of remote work affected the motherhood employment gap in Europe.
