I love my self-hosted instance of Yarr (yet another rss reader) which was super easy to set up with Caddy & Docker. It syncs my reading across devices (it's just a web page after all) and looks great on desktop and mobile.

Interestingly, YouTube subscriptions still works through RSS feeds, if you don't comment but still want to subscribe to a youtube channel you can use a feed reader instead of a google account

I think a resurgence of rss is crucial to this as well

You can "follow" people's updates, without ever being on the same social media site, it's universal. Just add their RSS to a reader.

Big social media sites like twitter etc removed rss to keep you on their site. We have to bring that back
