This book is years in the making, and I have nothing but deep gratitude to all the contributors, reviewers, and supporters who made this possible!
It’s a true reflection of a vibrant and growing field.
Steve Borgatti called it “the network analysis volume that tackles the BIG environmental problems” - and we hope it will serve as a valuable resource for researchers, students, and practitioners working at the nexus of networks and sustainability.
We cover:
🌍 Social influence, collaboration, and power
💡 The spread of innovation and learning
🏛️ Policy, governance, and equity
🌱 Real-world case studies from flood planning to seed exchange networks, wildfires to global trade
This book brings together leading thinkers from around the world to explore how social networks contribute to, and can help solve some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges - from climate adaptation and disaster recovery to sustainable agriculture and conservation.
📣 Exciting news: The 'Handbook of Social Networks & the Environment' - co-edited with the brilliant Örjan Bodin - is now out!

Love this new paper led by my former PhD student S. Sutcliffe showing how different dimensions of #adaptivecapacity interact to shape diverse #adaptation outcomes - with an important focus on when a *lack of* certain capacities force #maladaptation.

(3/4) As climate finance debates heat up post-#COP29, its important to ensure community-based and locally led adaptation is inclusive and does not reinforce existing power imbalances.
(2/4) Adaptation decisions are often dominated by older, wealthier community leaders—leaving many voices unheard. We find that social networks can empower people, but they can also reinforce existing hierarchies.
🌍Who gets a say in climate adaptation?
(1/4) Our new research from Kenya shows social networks shape agency over adaptation decisions - but not always equally.

My latest article with @laurielaybourn.bsky.social in which we explore how climate impacts such as devastating wildfires can erode our collective ability to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions which are increasing such impacts. A dynamic we call derailment risk.

Botox gave me fighting chance and I used it for years after trying just about everything that has been mentioned in this thread. Then I finally tried Emgality (Galcanezumab) and it completely changed my life. I hope you find something that works for you. Migraines are just so awful!
Hi all! 👋 I'm so happy to see more sociologists here these days. I study rental housing markets and family inequality. In a recent piece published in ASR, I show how network resource inequalities shape renters' housing search outcomes in LA. Check it out here!

Ah! Perfect. Thank you Jan!
Thank you!
Great coverage of our recent article on climate change adaptation & peacebuilding that covers both the findings of the review, as well as the unique perspective the lead author Bedoya Taborda brings to this topic.

Our new review on #adaptation and #peace highlights gaps in our understanding of feedbacks between climate change & conflict and underscores the need to build synergistic capacities that can address their cumulative, interactive impacts.

Hi Jan - can you add me? Thank you!
Hi Carlie - I would love to be included as well, if possible. I work on the determinants of climate adaptation/transformation - with a particular focus on social networks/social organization and issues of power/justice. Thank you!
