The U.S. executive order on #DeepSeaMining aims to fast-track the destructive industry, sidestepping global safeguards and threatening ocean health and multilateral cooperation.
A global moratorium is more urgent than ever!

The Metals Company's proposal to start seabed mining in the Pacific Ocean by 2027 has faced opposition from countries that are rarely aligned on these issues, such as China, Russia, India, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Indonesia, France, Argentina, Uganda, Mauritius, and Fiji.
Like anyone actually believed it was ever about the climate crisis, partnering with developing countries, and the benefit of humankind 🙄
"A riotous photography collection from a recent underwater mission off the coast of Chile shows new and fascinating deep-sea creatures." Good use of the word riotous. #deepsea #marinelife www.scientificamerican.com/article/see-...
Today has really been something at the ISA! 39 States plus the Africa Group united in support for UNCLOS and condemning this move to undermine multilateralism. 🤯🤯 #deepsea #defendthedeep
🌳➡️🌊 Deep-sea wood falls aren’t just debris—they’re entire ecosystems! Endemic species, weird food webs, and nutrient cycling all depend on them. But natural observations are rare. What’s hiding in the abyss? Our new paper dives in. #DeepSea #MarineBiology onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Do abyssal species that grow on polymetallic nodules have more restricted dispersal than fauna not depending on this resource? Contrasting distance-decay patterns in community similarity across the NE Pacific basin suggest they do! See our new study doi.org/10.1111/geb.... on time for #17DSBS!
Scientists recorded a mysterious sound in the Mariana Trench 10 years ago, a low grunt followed by a squeaky echo, and called it the "biotwang." Now they've figured out which whale makes the sound, which you can hear here: www.scientificamerican.com/article/myst... 🧪
Not that I have seen

Apple has joined businesses calling for a moratorium on #deepseamining 🎉🥳🍾

Didn’t even attempt.
100%. It’s infuriating.

I'm going to wax idealistic for a moment here. These negotiations are not just about the deep sea. These negotiations are wrestling with, for the first time, how humans will commercialize and exploit mineral resources that lie beyond national border.
Today it's the deep sea...
Exciting news: The International Seabed Authority has elected a new Secretary-General. Congratulations dear Leticia Carvalho, congratulations 🇧🇷
#ISA29 #oceanoptimism
Carvalho, currently an official at the United Nations Environment Programme in Nairobi, becomes the first woman and the first scientist to lead the ISA. She won in a landslide, taking 70% of the vote.
Breaking: Brazilian oceanographer Leticia Carvalho has been elected the next secretary-general of the International Seabed Authority, a leadership change that could slow the rush to strip-mine the deep sea for EV battery metals. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
This has the potential to be a SEISMIC shift at the International Seabed Authority. A win for science, the environment, women, and Latin America. A day to celebrate and remember! #deepseamining
Austria just became the 32nd member state of the 170-member International Seabed Authority to call for a precautionary pause or moratorium on deep sea mining until its environmental impacts on biodiverse ocean ecosystems can be better understood. #ISA29
Updating the Venn Diagram.
And we are now at 32 States calling for a pause, moratorium or ban on deep-sea mining at the International Seabed Authority.
Well done Austria!
We do not know enough about the deep ocean to ensure the effective protection of the marine environment!
And another! Austria is 32!
ICYMI: yesterday at the International Seabed Authority, four more countries called for a pause or moratorium on deep-sea mining - Guatemala, Tuvalu, Honduras and Malta. That brings the total now to 31!

Another reason to not mine the seabed: Oxygen discovery defies knowledge of the deep ocean t.co/DgptLhxRDJ 🧪🦑
New research challenges a long-held assumption about oxygen in the deep sea, with scientists finding oxygen produced without photosynthesis in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone.
Cool new BBC interactive piece on why the High Seas need to be protected. Lots of #deepsea content in there!
