In 2022, fin whales - the second largest animal on #Earth, were shot up to five times with explosive grenade harpoons, taking up to two hours to die. How can we accept this? This cruel industry should be consigned to the dustbin of history. We must restore natural balance, not destroy it for profit.
It's hard to comprehend how these men think this is the right thing to do or how they sleep at night. There’s no human need for #whale meat, and the industry is unprofitable. Most #Icelanders oppose it. Yet, the immense suffering caused to these sentient, incredible beings is even harder to ignore.
These companies are owned by Bjarni's friends. #Whaling licenses are usually issued in spring, when an anti-whaling government is expected to be in power. There’s an independent review into Iceland's whaling laws, but it hasn't reported its findings yet. This is textbook political #corruption.
This is Bjarni Benediktsson. He lost the #Icelandic election and won’t form part of a new government. He shouldn't be making decisions without a mandate, yet he just issued #whaling licenses to multiple companies for the next 10 years. The licenses allow higher numbers and more species to be hunted.
