One of the quietest, brightest thunderstorms I've seen in a while. So many gorgeous, distant flashes lighting up the sky over the city. #chicgao
art002e009287 (April 6, 2026) - Earth sets at 6:41 p.m. EDT, April 6, 2026, over the Moon's curved limb in this photo captured by the Artemis crew during their journey around the far side of the Moon. Orientale basin is perched on the edge of the visible lunar surface. Hertzsprung Basin appears as two subtle concentric rings, which are interrupted by Vavilov, a younger crater superimposed over the older structure. The lines of indentations are secondary crater chains formed by ejecta from the massive impact that created Orientale. The dark portion of Earth is experiencing nighttime. On Earth's day side, swirling clouds are visible over the Australia and Oceania region. Credit: NASA
Here’s a wide view of ‘Earthset.’ Jaw dropping. I can’t imagine what it was like for the #Artemis crew. Their lives and perspective on our place in the cosmos must be forever changed.
These are the games they should be doing blanket giveaways. I think the rain will hold off at least for a little, but when that wind and cold front hits, it will be like a real feel drop of 30 degrees lol.

Michigan has a long history of significant tornadoes in March.

Lightning strikes, Sears tower and Hancock Tower.
Finally a few decent lightning strikes! Had been a quiet storm year for Chicago thus far.
Speaking of quiet, usually when you get a tower strike you hear some bigtime thunder, but for whatever reason a few of those were really oddly hushed (relatively, in my opinion)
Multiple lighting bolts brightly up Chicago's night sky, while some make contact with the skyscrapers of Chicago's skyline, small and near the bottom of the frame
Here's another from the wee hours of the morning. This image is 4 separate lightning photos captured across 15 minutes then blended. In each shot, one of Sears' antenna and one of the Hancock's antenna are getting hit.
Lightning does strike some places twice, and often.

Photographing fireworks tonight? Try focus-pulling: twist the focus ring on you lens *during* a long exposure for some mind-bending results

Yesterday, June 28, 2025, Juston Drake and I documented several tornadoes near the communities of Clear Lake and Gary, South Dakota.
Here some photos we took during the chase. Going to be working a bit on the long format YouTube video. #sdwx
The mobile version still works for me, but otherwise get the same
Oh man, you could at least tag @robertloerzel.bsky.social for his video 🤷♂️
I can second 8 as well 😁

If you live somewhere with clear skies and no smoke (sorry chicago) now would be an ideal time to point a camera north (pics from a maine webcam)
substorm ongoing
The HUXt model shows a potential CME merger around the main M8.2 CME which should arrive sometime Sunday June 1 18 UT.
HUXt is almost 100% sure this CME will arrive and is giving a + 7/-5 hr uncertainty around the arrival time.
Things could get VERY interesting tomorrow.
Video of the dust storm coming into Chicago this evening, as seen around Montrose Point — featuring birds, toad sounds, and people catching a fish.
Chicago Dust Storm
What a wild evening. Never experienced a dust storm in Chicago before. Happened to be in a good spot (in terms of photography at least) as it approached and passed through
A dramatic thunderstorm looms over the Chicago skyline at sunset. The towering cumulonimbus is lit pink and orange by the setting sun on the left side, with a patch of blue sky peeking through. Meanwhile, darker, ominous clouds dominate the right side of the frame. The city below is partially shrouded in rain, with streetlights glowing in the foreground as twilight sets in.
I managed one shot of the cotton candy cumulonimbus before darker, low-level clouds slid into the top of the frame. It was a gorgeous, surreal moment to see rain still falling over the east side of downtown, while fluffy pink clouds and blue sky belied the strength of the storm still in progress
The chart shows Chicago in a 3/5 threat level for severe weather. The infographic reads: Today's Severe Weather Threat: May 15, 2025 as of 5:57 AM What We Know • Scattered severe supercells are expected this afternoon and evening, especially along/east of 1-39. • Primary time window: 3 to 10 PM CDT Potential Severe Weather Threats: Destructive hail, destructive wind, tornado What's Still Uncertain: • Coverage of storms & where they will develop. • While confidence has increased in storms developing today, some locations may not see any storms or severe weather. What To Do: • Remain weather aware through the evening. • Review your safety plan. Have multiple ways to get warnings!
An infographic on this afternoon/evening's storm potential from the NWS Chicago Office.
Keep I mind, the "ingredients" for strong storms will be present in the atmosphere, the question is (usually) whether they'll "mix" together to create storms.

That 1 egg was 40 eggs?
McCutchen!
The economics associated with weather / climate hazard research, data collection, and building codes should never be considered as a "spend".
This is an investment.
The more we learn will directly translate to saved lives and reduced loss costs because we've proactively taken mitigative action.

Good evening, a National Weather Service damage survey team has confirmed 2 brief tornadoes over far southern Iroquois County from Wednesday's storms. The NWS greatly appreciates the assistance provided by emergency management from Iroquois and Ford Counties. #ilwx
And there you have it. At least a dozen tornadic supercells in an STP bullseye of 9, smack dab in the center of an SPC High Risk. We can stop complaining now, or rejoice, or just appreciate the NWS.
Hail storm on approach earlier today in Chitown. Lakefront trail remained crowded, even during the storm 😂
