here i am, my hand rushing to sketch the stained glass windows someone so intentionally designed and built, barely legible via pencil on my page

the tamsui church was founded by missionary george mackay in the late 1800s. the building was built by the japanese. tamsui, a taiwanese northern port, here, a snapshot, a reflection of different cultures and peoples coming in and out for hundreds of years
to let life buzz around you and trying to stay patient and still with your work anyway. normally i would draw people too but they were zooming in and out too fast for their photos i could barely capture their poses.
there were moments while sketching i would think, omg youre in the way of my drawing! but thats what urban sketching is.
i was intrigued with all the local tourists in the neighborhood here to take photos with the church. i wasn’t sure what the big deal was, but then i remember i take for granted the grand churchs i have seen in other parts of the world. in fact, this architecture is rare to come across in taiwan.
sketching tamsui church æ·¡æ°´ i purposefully tried to skew the building, because i am still learning to enjoy paying attention and drawing what is fun for me to draw (rather than rote copying because i dont enjoy that).

process video
More making, more unlearning, more relearning how to see again. More letting myself draw and make what I so desire while inquiring along the way. I will start sharing more art thoughts because the process behind the making matters to me more than the result.

back to drawing and it feels so good! i had a lot of fun just making this up as i went today. had so much life stuff going on i took a break from drawing my own things that somehow that gave it a lot of room to breathe and i am coming back feeling more inspired :)
played with the new procreate brushes, creating random shapes and tada!

i decided not to continue with peachtober because i feel my gut wanting to draw/work on other things that i am itching to do! todays piece was relatively fast but somehow this girl stepping into water came to mind
drawn in procreate
there is something grounding about drawing, but especially grounding when i get to doodle and draw whatever comes to mind or i feel like in the moment.

taipei main station urban sketching
drawing also allowed me to pay attention to the emotions and expressions on stage and had me in awe seeing how much fun the musicians were having too 🎷
it was so much fun and so much play, the music was mesmerizing and the energy both on and off stage was so in flow. i had not really been a jazz listener before but todays show put it all in a whole new perspective for me.
then later while the tokyo blue notes orchestra group played (absolutely phenomenal btw), i did some gestural sketches and played with color along with the music.
a whole day spent urban/life sketching! the portion i am sharing today is from an evening spent at the taipei jazz festival. i had prepped some sketchbook pages ahead of time blue and yellow and it fit the flashing yellow blue lights perfectly

grateful for how close to nature taipei is, and a bus ride up, could hear all the birds, insects, and water sounds. i also saw some giant butterflies, ants, and a centipede.
spent today doing life drawing in the mountains, it was really cool! perhaps that art will be shown another time. afterwards, painted a little bit at a cafe before the sun set.

but i think im starting to feel more comfortable playing with paints now. its late so i did something simple for the inside of my sketchbook and also did some prepping for more drawing this weekend ~
finally finally after thinking about it for ages i am starting to use my bigger sketchbook. i have been itching to paint for a long time but kept putting it off because i felt like my skills werent at a point yet where i was comfortable using up paints (theyre not cheap!)

its gotten me thinking to draw more asian women in a way that appeals to me, maybe more magical, wacky and powerful than any i’ve seen depicted in art
i wonder how my women/femme/queer ancestors lived their lives, and how they would have liked to live their lives if they could have chosen.
