Hi! I'm Ann. I'm revising an adult fantasy adventure story over the next few weeks. If I was to bring any fantasy books to camp, I'd probably bring a few that are on my bookshelf waiting to be read. So, maybe I'd bring The Hurricane Wars and Road to Ruin.

β€œWhatever Gavin may have suggested, it's conjecture. I understand you're distressed about the fate of your route and this fantasy would save it. But, traders have to work to be successful. Prince Julian and Farthington need you. Don't abandon him to follow a foolish fancy.”

There was a loud bang and the guard hit the floor. Suddenly the lanterns were lit. Kylie blinked several times and saw Julian standing beside her. β€œSorry, I think I broke your hairpins. I'll buy you new ones when we get back home.”

I supposes the most fun thing I researched was some astronomy terms for one of my sci-fi novels.

I don't do much research during the writing process. For the most part, I like to write about areas that I'm familiar with.

Hi, I'm Ann. I write fantasy and sci-fi.
When my kids were little, I enjoyed going to the library with them so they could pick out books that we would read together.

I started revising one of my fantasy novels. I've been procrastinating by working on the sequel, but it's time to give book 1 another round of edits.

The breeze tapered off on the return to New Willowtree and Kylie had finished all of her water with the rising heat. β€œIs the river good for swimming?” she asked. They had been following it for some time and she had been fighting the urge to stop and jump in.

The romance is usually a subplot and the two characters fall in love during the journey/quest.

My main characters are usually single at the start of the story so a romance can develop.

One of my favourite elements is the banter between the MC and the dragon that she's bonded to.

Hey #revpit hopefuls! Any upmarket speculative peeps here or authors who real upmarket spec? Would anyone want to swap first chapters or queries for one final read through before the submission period opens?

Thanks all!

She returned to the campfire, where the companions had assembled and Rebba handed her a mug of hot soup. β€œIt helps to keep your hands busy while your mind is spinning.”

Photo collage with a medium blue background.
Top Photos:
1. Landscape view of a volcano surrounded by greenery with a cloudy blue sky above.
2. Inside a cave with a sandy floor, looking outwards to the blue sky.
Middle Photos:
3. A wall of blue ice.
4. A red heart made of flames.
5. Landscape of a large iceberg, with water in front of it and blue sky
Bottom Photos.
6. Landscape of a waterfall flowing into a pool, with trees next to the falls.
7. Close up of blue & teal dragon scales.
8. Close up of a woman and a man lying in the grass, looking lovingly at each other. Woman in a red dress. Man in a black t-shirt.

I'm working on my synopsis today! Last year I submitted a sci-fi, but this year I'm trying a fantasy.

(I'll have to go 'large' with this one.)
Stunned at Xandris' sudden friendliness, she climbed onto his back in silence. She held onto the large scales jutting out below his neck and her breath caught in her throat as he launched into the air.

I might need to bring an umbrella, but I think I'll be going out for a walk and plot soon.

β€œYou don't think it's a good idea to handle lizards and then touch food?” Adalyn asked.
β€œI don't care how much you wash those things. Use a spoon,” Bethany said.
β€œThey aren't things, they're hands and for pity's sake take a joke.” She dried her hands, being careful of the scales.

For the villain - Charismatic, determined, manipulative

My characters frequently surprise me. I'll usually go along with it unless they are taking the plot in a direction that I didn't want to go.

I try to sprinkle in the backstory. Sometimes my characters will share an anecdote about their past. Or, I'll reveal it with their inner dialogue.

With my sci-fi novels, I need to be careful that not all of the characters have engineering backgrounds and know how to fix everything. It has to depend on their training or experience.

Giving the characters different personalities can be a challenge. Also giving them enough flaws, so they aren't all perfect.

With a new character, often their profession is one of the first things that I think about. That tends to help me figure out their interests and their talents.
