Many moons ago I booked a talk about Tolkien and the Chase for my local WFA branch.
Thanks for the info, I know where to look next time, annoyingly I don’t think we were far away, we were aiming for Freda’s Grave when one of the kids decided they didn’t like being so close to deer.
We saw the deer, I couldn’t work out where to look for the remains of the camp. We went to look at the reconstructed hut but sadly that isn’t open on weekdays.
Out and about with the kids, and without my wife to tell me that taking the kids to a cemetery is perhaps inappropriate, we visited the Cannock Chase Military Cemeteries before the heavens opened.
A couple of weeks ago I posted about going down a research rabbit hole with the Battle of Shaiba. Soon after when approached for a talk, I couldn’t resist…
Pleased to be supporting @ntwf.bsky.social with their first online talk. Do join us on 5th May if you are free!
After an extended family weekend in Llandudno, braving Storm Dave, the sun came out and the wind dropped as we packed up. So being in North Wales, we did the only logical thing and visited one of Edward I’s castles!

Optimistically backed the Vale to beat Sunderland on Sunday in the FA Cup, bought this with my profit!
I am firmly down a research rabbit hole with the Battle of Shaiba, April 1915.
A battle I’ve never given much thought to until researching Australian officers of the Indian Army and found a Major who died there.
Ahhh but of course, cheers Aimee!
I’ll have to blow the cobwebs off of that particular volume and give it a read, cheers Jock!
In an old WFA YouTube video John Bourne says that FWW commanders picked a staff similar to how a football manager might pick a support team after they are appointed. Can anyone point me in the direction of any written material which discusses how a commander put their staff together? #fwwhist
History mainly but current views might inform the discussion
I’d be interested in Boer War…
I think I asked this before but over on the 'old place', has anyone got recommendations for works on the following: Australian military culture?
Overarching Australian military history?
Australia and the Great War?
An Australian officer of the Indian Army referring to his first few months in India as ‘bonza’ might be my favourite archival find ever!
Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure of meeting Gordon Corrigan but his work led the way for many of us who followed.
Sepoys in the Trenches is a book I have read time and again and which I frequently consult.
My thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
Cover of book with text in yellow reading: The Firearm Revolution: From Renaissance Italy to the European Empires, overlaid on an image of an angel in seventeenth-century dress with wings and a long gun.
Hello Bluesky! My new book, THE FIREARM REVOLUTION, is out on 14 April. It’s about how a new technology changed society, and how hard it was to control. Here’s a little thread of what’s inside:
The Librarian at work was having a clear out… I rescued these poor defenceless books…
For the first time since October, my writing is flowing and I’m getting bits written that I’ve owed people for months!
I’ll be joining the Wiltshire Branch of The WFA on Sunday 1st March to talk about the Indian Army, the manpower issues it faced during the First World War and how these problems were overcome.
Do come along if you are in the area!
