Black Watch Territorials at Stobs camp near Hawick, before or during the Great War.

It’s likely a prewar summer camp. Although the 3rd line Bns of the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th were there for the first 4 months of 1915.

Coming from a fishing town, a great many man served during the Great War in the RNR and RNVR on minesweeping and patrol work.

This is apparently among the best accounts on this work.
It’s now at the top of the reading pile.

I don’t know if M. Simont travelled to the front for this particular work. But he was highly respected for the combat art he created in the #GreatWar.

Before Yossarian Books, politics, science, environment, travel. Whatever I feel like, really.

The First World War can still raise some tricky questions for those in power. Two novels from the time show us why. Both had a very subversive message.

Written near the 100th anniversary, this was a personal take on two of the best books to come out of the War.

First World War British soldiers stand in front of a row of buildings, the nearest of which is damaged. In front of the building is a newly constructed wooden walkway has been built over a gap in the road. A man pushes a wheelbarrow and others look on. Most are dressed in leather jerkins and steel helmets.

A postcard of British soldiers repairing a road in front of a damaged building in France during the First World War.

Most are wearing the leather jerkins and steel helmets. Possibly a Labour corks unit.

The image dates to the 1916-18 period.

I follow some pretty esoteric alleyways in studying the #GreatWar. Atm, I’m reading “The Heart and Soul of an Army” (1921) by Sir Aylmer Hunter-Weston. This excerpt on page 271 speaks to the fallacy that supporting arms (including airpower) win wars. It’s worth repeating today. #booksky #milsky
