School drop, fly to Augusta, home for dinner: Rory McIlroy’s scouting trips pay off at Masters The defending Masters champion skipped three PGA Tour events to practice at Augusta, where he has built up a ‘nice cushion’ with a six-shot lead

Astonishing level of privilege to (a) travel by private plane for a round of golf, and (b) have it reported without criticism. www.theguardian.com/sport/2026/a...

With the great tits seemingly absent, the local blue tits have continued to show an interest.

So quiet that a spider has been the only thing to watch for several days.

This morning, the blue tits popped by to check on progress. Might they have plans if the great tits have left?

Nothing to report. The nest seems complete but nobody has entered for days. I thought yesterday’s warm sunshine would have stimulated some activity but it’s all quiet. So much so, a spider has moved in.

Albeit, I know no two studies are the same. Wrestling with that at the moment, in comparing life history evolution in two remarkably long-running nestbox studies.

To be more optimistic, the value of long-term studies is negatively frequency-dependent. So if American efforts are prematurely concluded, the value of others to the scientific community will increase.

Long-term ecological studies provide a narrative of biological change. Without them, it’s a struggle to overcome the shifting baseline, which is possibly the motive for eliminating them.

Oh no. NSF Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) program shuttered.

I hope this is driving home to folks that anti-DEI/anti-woke are functioning mostly as a way to make racism more palatable by framing it as a kind of defensive reaction to an imagined unfairness.

We have a new record 🚨 the warm month of march in the Netherlands had its effect on the first laying date of the Great tits! Breaking the record by two days the first egg date this year is 21st March. One blue tit went even beyond that and noted a first egg date on 19th of march! #breedingseason2026

This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.

I don’t think she revisited the box since late morning. Having brought in lots of cup lining material, I’m wondering whether we might get an egg in the morning 🤞

About ten minutes ago, there was a switch from moss (which forms the bulk of the nest) to something fluffier, which is used to line the nest cup and insulate the eggs and chicks so they stay warm.
