Seed fatty acid composition and physical dormancy in fire-prone ecosystems AbstractBackground and Aims. The maintenance of seed banks and timing of germination are fundamental to ensuring population persistence. Physical dormancy

While we found no correlation between seed dormancy-breaking temperatures and fatty acid composition, our research showed that fatty acid composition was distinct in different seed tissue types and shaped by habitat!

The first chapter of my PhD is out! 🌱πŸ”₯

We looked at whether fatty acids (a common seed oil) changed composition across fire-prone and fire-free habitats + dormancy-breaking temperatures in physically dormant seeds! (1/2)

New paper out! After the 2019-2020 #fires in Australia our team undertook #IUCN Red List assessments of fire affected #plant species, to handle the volume we undertook paired rapid and full assessments and compared their accuracy 1/4

Defining the pyro‐thermal niche: do seed traits, ecosystem type and phylogeny influence thermal thresholds in seeds with physical dormancy? Seeds are a key pathway for plant population recovery following disturbance. To prevent germination during unsuitable conditions, most species produce dormant seeds. In fire-prone regions, physical .....

Finally a good reason to make my first bluesky post.
Our new paper describes the pyro-thermal niche - a way to qualify how seeds respond to fire type temperatures.

The metrics that comprise the pyro-thermal niche are influenced by phylogeny!

#ESAus24 done and dusted! Thrilled to have co-organised a molecular ecology symposium with @nathalimicro.bsky.social and @ryantangney.bsky.social, and thanks @ecolsocaus.bsky.social for once again hosting an amazing conference! 🌱πŸ”₯
