Today we celebrate, honor, and uplift trans and gender non-conforming athletes.
Across the league, alongside our fellow NWLS supporter groups, we’re creating space for queer athletes to be seen, supported, and celebrated.
Because trans athletes belong—in every league, on every field. 🏳️⚧️ #tdov
Every day, and especially today, we invite our members and fans to join us in celebrating the trans people in our community. Trans people belong, period. Trans people belong in sport, in women's soccer, in public life.
I’m so glad Sarah posted this here. I don’t have Instagram but if you do, watch the reel. What Uncle Fish says here should be heard by everyone.
If you don’t have Instagram, listen to today’s episode of Good Game. Actually, do that anyway.
Just a reminder on TDOV that women's sports faces 8 zillion threats, and trans people aren't one of them.
NWSL member groups of the Independent Supporters Council are celebrating the stories of trans athletes who deserve to be known.

Soooooo about that written policy ???
This means nothing where there isn’t actively a policy or plan to protect trans players
I wonder how they can celebrate our trans siblings without having a written policy protecting their rights to play in this league 🤔🤔🤔

re: Blue Crew TDOV post
We reached out to people and were told they were concerned for their safety. Which is valid. Its scary right now for our trans family.
We have work to do to make it safe for our trans family to be visible. We have to fight for our siblings and make it so they don't have to choose between celebrating their accomplishments and protecting their family.
Thank goodness for the NWSL. Nice to see a supporter culture that actually prioritizes inclusivity.
Kumi Yokoyama is a legend we celebrate on this TDOV

Their accomplishments on and off the field deserve to be celebrated, however, in consideration of their safety and wellbeing, we have decided to highlight the trans athlete community as a whole. They are competitors, they are teammates, and they are strong. We hope that these visible athletes and athletic organizations remind us that sports and athleticism are important to the whole trans community. Their fight, grit, and determination enrich us all. Today we say Trans Athletes Belong.

Chicago Local 134 Supporters Group is highlighting Chris Mosier. Born in Chicago, Chris is a trailblazing transgender triathlete, duathlete and hall of famer recognized for both his athletic achievements and advocacy. He is the first transgender athlete to represent the United States in international competition, the first transgender athlete in an ESPN Body Issue, and the first transgender athlete sponsored by Nike. He is also the first transgender athlete to qualify for the Olympic Trials in the gender they identify.
Chris created the site transathlete.com, a resource for students, athletes, coaches, and administrators to find information about trans inclusion in athletics at various levels of play. He has mentored transgender athletes around the globe, from high school and recreational to the professional levels, and helped teams, leagues, and professional sports leagues create gender-inclusive policies. Thank you, Chris, for your continued determination to fight for trans and LGBTQIA+ inclusion in sports.

Cloud 9 is sharing the story of Harrison Browne, the first publicly out transgender athlete in professional hockey. While Harrison came out as a transgender man to teammates in college, he did so publicly in 2016 as a professional player for the Buffalo Beauts of the NWHL. He won the Isobel Cup with the Beauts in the 2016-17 season, and again with the Metropolitan Riveters in 2017-18. Harrison also helped form the first ever transgender policy in professional sports.
Following his retirement from pro hockey in 2018, he has become an author, actor, and filmmaker. In 2025, Harrison and sister Rachel published a non-fiction book about transgender inclusion in sports called Let Us Play. He developed and produced the short film Pink Light. The Spirit Squadron and Rose Room Collective are sharing the story of Kumi Yokoyama, a dynamic Japanese forward known for his creativity, technical precision, and attacking flair. Kumi made 12 appearance in two seasons with the Washington Spirit and was part of the 2021 Championship team. Beyond their on-field impact, Yokoyama has also been an influential figure off the pitch. In June 2021, Kumi came out as a transgender man in an interview with fellow Nadeshiko striker Yuki Nagasato. “[Canadian midfielder Quinn] wore a [sweatshirt] that said ‘Protect Trans Kids’ before a game, and I realized that’s what taking action looks like,” Kumi said in an interview with the Japanese Times. “To be able to accept people you have no relationship with, that’s the kind of person I’d like to become and I hope we can create that society.” Kumi is still playing professionally in the Nadeshiko League with Okayama Yunogo Belle.
This Trans Day of Visibility, we’re celebrating Kumi Yokoyama, a champion and history-maker in more ways than one. Thank you, Kumi, for your time with the Spirit and for living your truth! Trans people belong everywhere, on and off the pitch.
Today & every day, we say Trans People Belong.
