Mother 3 for Game Boy Advance
Today, April 20th, 2026 is the 20th Anniversary of the release of Mother 3 in Japan. It has yet to be officially localized in any language.
Yeah, that’s what a lot of DS corners in Kyushu looked like about a year ago. DS has way too much of this software lol
I still need to solder in a battery holder for new juice into all of my Super Famicom and Game Boy games… Easily looking at a dozen weekends of work there 😅
3 vertical panels. Panel 1 labeled 2014 - me with short hair in front of a CRT with Shenmue on it and a Dreamcast, SNES and N64 in front of it. Me saying "I love collecting retro game stuff! I'm gonna play ALL the games!" Panel 2 labeled 2019 - me with slightly longer hair, more consoles in front of the TV, with static on the screen. Me saying "These old systems needs a lot of maintenance. I have to get better at electronics repair. Panel 3 labeled 2024 - even more systems on the CRT, but me with my current long hair sitting at a table with my back to them, soldering a circuit board, my custom PICO-8, my handmade Vectrex controller, my "Game Man" I made by consolising a GBA on the table and me saying "...remember when I used to play games?"
Since it feels like all I've been doing for the last 3 weeks has been repairing my game collection, today's #throwbackthursday is the little comic strip I made about this EXACT situation two years ago!

Anhand der Beschreibung dachte ich schon „das muss ein Golden Sun Summon sein!“ - close enough!
Hayazashi Nidan Morita Shougi 2 box and cartridge
Hayazashi Nidan Morita Shougi 2 circuitboard with the large ST018 chip
Today's Random Game Saturday is a famous one-- Hayazashi Nidan Morita Shougi 2! Why is it so famous? The ST018 chip that runs the shogi logic is actually a full ARM CPU with its own 21MHz oscillator, far more powerful than the S-CPU itself
I'm not good enough at Shogi to tell if it helps, though
Made it to the credits and got a reply from ModRetro, so I‘ve updated the thread.
In this case it was (allegedly) by request of the current IP holder D4E.
In a strange turn of events, ModRetro answered that the manual credits were omitted by request of the IP holder (D4E).
ModRetro is planning to put out a video with an interview of the director in a retrospective of the game to pay proper homage to the dev team though, which is great.
They are still in the in-game credits, which have been updated with the current IP holder.
This likely means D4E didn’t dictate to cut them out.
This makes Modretros decision not to list them in the manual credits even weirder.
I couldn’t find any info if the end credits and have to make it past stage 5 yet, the game is tough!
That’s the instruction manual, yes. I don’t know if they were also removed from the in-game end credits (yet).
Yeah, there‘s way more about them that grinds peoples gears the wrong way. Understandably.
But as someone that worked in the game industry, I am very particular about publishers properly crediting staff that worked on a game.
Might be, but even then they could have just listed Marc Max as „Additional Programming“ instead of rewriting the credited roles.
They usually only list improvements as changes on their product sites and there seem to be none listed. The game‘s pretty hard to beat, but I‘ll try.
Some will disagree and say that’s a legit reason.
However, listing Marc Max as „Additional Programming“ instead of the sole „Programmer“ wouldn’t have been that hard, right?
The way this is done feels like „overwriting“ the original credits.
I assume they edited the original names of the developers out of the in-game credits too then?
I don’t agree that it’s something cultural, it’s simply a very unfair practice of the Japanese game industry.
Nobody could possibly be happy to be removed from a renowned work they‘ve created.
Nothing against the work Marc put into it (would love to know about the changes by the way!).
But completely obliterating the original creators from the credits of this game is not a good look for Modretro.
Modretro is not crediting the original Japanese development team of ZAS in their Game Boy rerelease.
These people developed it: www.mobygames.com/game/109302/...
I need to know which game this is from~
