We introduce *transportation accessibility*—long central in planning—into legal analysis of land use & transport.
Mobility-based strategies (just one more lane, bro) create sprawl, eroding proximity & overall access. We start from a goal of access and work back.
Abundance requires this shift.
The Conveyal team is pleased to announce a strategic partnership with EBP to collaborate on access to opportunities analysis, scenario planning, and decision support for metropolitan planning and development. Stay tuned for more news this week!

Any sort of shot we have at making transportation in the US better requires a fundamental shift in how the profession works with transportation demand modeling

🚨 Transportation for the Abundant Society 🚨
New draft paper (w/ Jonathan Levine) now up.
"Abundance" needs to grapple with transportation beyond megaprojects and institutions beyond zoning. We propose anchoring planning metrics in *access*, not speed of travel. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Conceptual Framework: What is the Relationship Between Transportation Investments and Gentrification and Displacement? Source: The authors, based on a review of the literature. Note: Transportation investment is one factor in the complex feedback loop that causes and responds to gentrification. Transportation planners and policymakers need to understand where their work fits into this system to effectively pre-empt and mitigate the negative effects of gentrification that may be associated with transportation projects.
In our research, we first set out to theorize the potential relationships between transportation & gentrification.
Transport investments could result in increased access & desirability, and this, in turn, could increase home values. This could, in theory, result in displacement of marginalized ppl.

You may have heard of Bicycle Level of Traffic Stress
Now, help researchers develop Pedestrian Level of Traffic Stress by taking this survey
Good pictures (and video) of intersections and straightforward questions, should take you 5-20 minutes depending on how thorough you are
Great new longitudinal research from Drs. Nick Ferenchak and Wes Marshall, showing the value of protected bike lanes (over single stripes, sharrows, or nothing) in increasing rates of cycle commuting.

Figure 9 from https://authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S1077-291X(25)00007-4 A map of Edmonton showing the municipal boundary, on-demand zones, and accessibility change (in 10,000 jobs) based on median wait times for on-demand zones. Most of the access changes are green (30k-50k increase in access to jobs), with some areas of dark green (50k-110k increase) and yellow (0-5k decrease)
Have you ever wondered how to integrate on-demand transit options into detailed assessments of access to opportunities?
Check out this new analysis of Edmonton's combined bus network redesign and expansion of on-demand transit zones.

FHWA’s “Bike and Ped Planning, Program, and Project Development Guidance” is an invaluable resource IMHO.
It tells the policy “story” of exactly where/how walking and biking projects are accommodated within the laws, regs, and policies around the Federal transpo.

"... tracing how accessibility rose to prominence and became the guiding principle for measuring transport and land-use outcomes."
Who's got examples of transit agencies doing really good station area planning? Looking at station and entrance/egress design, multimodal integration, bike and pedestrian access, and land use.
More highways --> More driving --> More emissions
UCLA researchers: "Across the U.S., new and widened freeways accounted for 55% of the observed increase in freeway driving [from 2000 to 2019]."

I print and sell maps, too! The "Transit Maps" collection has some stunning maps, but none more so than this astounding, almost psychedelic, isochrone map of the time taken to travel from Paris to just about everywhere else in France by rail in 1882.
