When it comes to the energy transition I'm a glass half full person.

I know: plenty of people would say that's terribly naive. They point to the scale of the challenge. They point to vested interests. They point to hard-to-abate sectors.

And they're not wrong. But here's what they miss.

Energy Transitions in Regulated Markets (Forthcoming Article) - Natural gas has replaced coal as the dominant fuel for U.S. electricity generation. However, utilities in regulated U.S. states have retired coal more slowly than others. We build a structural model of rate-of-return regulation during an energy transition where utilities face tradeoffs between lowering costs and maintaining and using legacy capacity. A regulated utility facing carbon taxes lowers short-run coal generation 48% as much as a cost minimizer would. Thirty years after a sudden energy transition, a cost minimizer has retired 71% more coal capacity than the regulated utility. Alternative regulations may jeopardize affordability and reliability goals during energy transitions.

For the first time ever, heat pumps outsold gas boilers in Germany in 2025.

48% of all new heating systems installed last year were heat pumps. Gas fell to just 39%. A decade ago, heat pumps had a 7% market share. The transformation has been remarkable.

We love to say "costs fall X% every time capacity doubles." This paper looks at 87 technologies and says: actually, no. Past learning rates are not reliable predictors of future learning.

After Spain's blackout, critics blamed renewable energy. It's part of a bigger attack When millions lost power in Spain and Portugal this spring, some were quick to blame too much solar and wind power. That wasn't the cause, but the misinformation had an impact.

This story was inspired by a conversation with a fossil fuel exec in Paris a few days after the big outage in Spain. He blamed too much renewable energy as the cause.

Was that really it? Turns out: No.

Cool new AER paper uses data from Clean Air Act offset markets to assess the efficiency of air pollution regulation. The analysis finds that marginal benefits of abatement exceed mean offset prices more than ten-fold, across most regions and pollutants.
