Norway’s Expert Committee Rejects Nuclear Power but Urges Building Knowledge for the Future A government-appointed Norwegian Nuclear Committee has unanimously recommended that Norway should not pursue the development of nuclear power at this time. After a year and a half of study involving experts in physics, technology, economics, law, ethics, and social sciences, the committee concluded that nuclear energy remains too expensive, time-consuming, and beyond Norway’s current expertise. Their findings show that even under optimistic conditions, nuclear power would require electricity prices of at least NOK 1.13 (EUR 0.10) per kWh to be financially viable—far higher than Norway’s expected long-term prices of NOK 0.50–0.80. The committee warns that without drastic cost reductions of 70–80%, private investors would not find nuclear projects profitable, and government subsidies lack economic justification. Moreover, the committee estimates that even if Norway were to approve nuclear power now, production would not realistically begin before the mid-2040s, meaning it would not contribute to the country’s 2050 climate targets under the Paris Agreement. The report also cautions that anticipation of future nuclear facilities could slow investment in renewable energy alternatives such as hydropower upgrades, wind, and solar expansion. Small modular reactors (SMRs), often seen as promising, remain unproven—production facilities are not yet established, and costs are uncertain. Waste management poses another long-term challenge. Spent nuclear fuel must be safely stored in deep geological repositories for up to 100,000 years, as practiced only in Finland so far. Despite these obstacles, the committee acknowledges that nuclear energy can provide stable, emission-free power, independent of weather conditions. It therefore recommends that Norway invest in nuclear research, education, and international collaboration instead of launching power plants—focusing on building knowledge rather than infrastructure.

Senate panel to spend three weeks vetting governor's gas-line plan as questions mount over tax abatements Sen. Giesel said the Senate Resources Committee will meet daily for about three weeks to scrutinize the governor's gas-line proposal (SB 280/HJR 18), raising questions about broad tax-abatement language and a volumetric tax trigger that would impose a 6-cent-per-MCF levy after a 1,000,000,000-cubic-foot threshold.

Sen. Giesel is leading a thorough three-week review of the governor's gas-line legislation, raising critical questions about tax abatements and the financial impact on Alaskans.
