More than a month earlier than last year, Kestrels paid my nest box a surprise visit this week! After I hurriedly cleared the box of an old squirrel’s drey, the female immediately returned to inspect the new bedding. (Photos digiscoped through living room window)

Was feeling a bit nesh today, so I made do with a bit of arm chair birding; a flock of 95 Fieldfare greatly appreciated the windfall apples I put out for them but the highlight of the day was a skein of circa 380 Pink-footed Geese that flew west early afternoon.

Spent most of 2024 birding from my garden; it's amazing what turned up during my DIY and gardening breaks!
Hoping for more of these in 2025! 🤞

Yes, look at my previous post of the similar designed nest box made from my old blackboard I had in my lab.

The nest box is in fact based on a nest I found when I was 14 near a place called Badger in Shropshire.
The nest was in an oak tree with the nest hole itself being about 10 feet up. This lead to a downward leading 'tunnel', the end of which expanded into a nesting chamber.

17 breeding seasons and 42 chicks later, my recycled classroom blackboard finally gave up the ghost.
I’ll hopefully have a ‘new improved’ version up very soon!

Even at 80%, I still have the same problem with St Treecreeper and Green Sandpipers.

Out of interest, does the PUC allow you to set the 'confidence levels' as with BirdNET-Pi? I've set mine to 80%; this might mean some detections are not recorded but it does save time going through a large number of false positives.

Same here; my BirdNET-Pi has recorded a single pied wagtail this morning and nothing since yesterday at noon 😂

Plenty of Redwing and Fieldfare around the garden at the moment; I was surprised that only one or two came down to the meal I'd prepared for them 🤔

They are in better shape than the bins I saved up for in the 1970's! 🙂
