Sir Muir Gray, former Chief Knowledge Officer for the NHS, believes walking should be prescribed to patients. In our June issue he gives his vision of the future of Britain's healthcare, with walking playing a central role.

Could this be the easiest high-mountain walk in the Lake District? Skiddaw is the fourth highest peak in England, yet the route in our June issue starts from a high car park and follows clear paths and grassy tracks up a steady gradient right to the top.

Have you ever wild camped on Dartmoor? Your feeds are probably full of the news that the right to pitch a tent on the moor has been upheld by the Supreme Court.
Is it something you’ve ever tried? Or something you’re eager to try for the first time? Let us know!

The Salt Path stars Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs, pictured here.
Author Raynor Winn was sceptical about her book, The Salt Path, being adapted into a movie. But the result has exceeded her expectations. In our May issue, we chat to her and the film’s director Marianne Elliott

In May 1955, the first Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells was published, written and illustrated by Alfred Wainwright. Seventy years later, Wainwright's guides still give pleasure to millions of walkers on the fell and by the fireside.

The Glyndwr's Way in Mid Wales is almost certainly our quietest national trail. You will walk all day and hardly see a soul. That just leaves you, the path, and these fabulous open landscapes.

We took advantage of the final days of dawn-to-dusk sunshine (for now, anyway) to head up Rhobell Fawr in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park. This ancient volcano stands on its own, providing remarkable views of Snowdonia's southern summits (it's Cadair Idris in this shot).

What have all the places in these photos got in common?
They’re all found along the Pennine Way – Britain’s oldest official long-distance path that turns 60 this month. Happy birthday to one of our greatest ever pioneers!

Pentle Bay on the eastern side of Tresco, Isles of Scilly
Is this Britain's most exotic walking experience? The Isles of Scilly lie 30 miles west of mainland Cornwall and are home to tropical gardens, white sand and turquoise ocean. We spend a weekend there in our April issue and enjoy two sun-soaked walks.

“It has taken me to so many places … it has been truly life changing. I can't imagine not doing the challenge!”
Walk 1000 Miles has been a part of Kate Lowe’s life for a decade now. You too can sign up and feel equally as good about yourself and the world.

“The reason you can get through the winter... is because you know in your heart that spring is going to come.”
How many of us feel exactly the same as author Simon Barnes right now?
We chat to him in our Spring issue about his new book, Spring Is The Only Season @bloomsburybooksuk.bsky.social
Keep an eye out for these boxing bounders on your walks over the next month or so. Brown Hares are normally creatures of darkness, grazing by night or at dusk or dawn. But in early spring you can spot them in broad daylight, as they race and chase and turn on each other in fur-flying boxing bouts.
Delighted to welcome @prof-tregoning.bsky.social as our Guest Columnist this issue. He’s tried every alleged life-extending activity and diet known to science for his new book Live Forever? and guess which simple idea comes out on top? Yep. (But the journey to that conclusion is brilliant) 😉
We WILL be back! And we'll do our research properly next time too 😁
Have you ever been denied your walk's star attraction at the last moment?
We were when walking along the Llangollen Canal, about to step onto the magnificent Pontcysyllte Aqueduct... only to meet a locked gate!
(The structure's currently under maintenance. Doh!)

"I can climb a stile, and I can think clearly... I don't think there is any doubt that going walking has played a big part in still being able to do those two things."
Stewart Stonehewer has logged each of his walks over the past 50 years, and plans to hit 30,000 miles on his 90th birthday in July.
The view from High Cup Nick, on the Pennine Way
Is there a more perfect example of a U-shaped valley in Britain?
This is High Cup in the North Pennines – often called England's Grand Canyon – and this view is perhaps the most jaw dropping moment of the Pennine Way.

"Whatever was going on in our lives we could either talk about it or get away from it just by doing some miles over the Chilterns or the Downs... It's one of the many reasons I owe an awful lot to good old walking, and to Sean" – Bill Bailey speaking to Country Walking about close friend Sean Lock.
"What a place to spend a few healing hours." Moorland might not have the glamour of mountains, but for a feeling of true freedom in an vast, seemingly endless expanse, it's hard to beat. These shots are from a trip up Melmerby Fell in Cumbria. #hiking #walking #MelmerbyFell #CumbriaLandscape
