After a very long very wet day, it was nice to come home to the latest print version of @thedeadlands.com on my doorstep. Thankfully the magazine didn’t get wet. Soggy paper is hard to read.

My writing has always been an on-and-off thing. I just moved back to “on” again, but putting words together into a coherent story is still a struggle. I’m pushing through the hard parts so I can eventually make something good. And I’d rather not write at all than let the plagiarism bot do it for me.

It’s poetry month! And I have a poetry book!

TIME TRAVEL IS EASY examines Deep Time, queerness, childhood traumas, dinosaurs, and the dread of the late Anthropocene. It includes my Rhysling-nominated poem “Toward a Cladistic Analysis of Hauntings.” Available here:

it's #transdayofvisibility and i have a short story collection coming out about the beautiful, horrible parameters of a body (and, depending on who you are, how the world treats it). if that speaks to you, consider pre-ordering

As of today, I don't know any trans person in KS who received direct help from a relocation org. If you are such a person, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Lots of trans people in KS who are in need and/or trying to leave, rely on mutual aid and QT orgs operating in KS. List below.

I haven’t done anything creative in a long time, but I finally started reading (very) short fiction again. Life has been lifing and I’m so exhausted. I trust that I can use that to create new stories and infuse new life into older pieces that I perhaps lacked sufficient life experience to finish.

Hi hey my new book comes out on Jan 20, and she's real pretty, and there's a giveaway of ten of these shiny sprayed hardcovers on GR, otherwise you can ask your local bookstore for one and that would mean the world to me!

"When the world goes dark in 1980s Romania, Rosi is trapped on the truck she uses as a smuggling vessel along with the driver, Gigi, her arranged-marriage fiancé. The mood of the novel perfectly matches the grim and oppressive descriptions of this newly changed world. As cosmic horrors erupt around them, Rosi gathers the other survivors together to make their way to a hoped-for safety, led only by the radio signals they pick up. Woodroe’s writing is tight and clean, emphasizing the desperation and also the real fear that people would experience in this apocalyptic setting. The novel skillfully mixes celestial terror and off-the-wall weirdness while making good use of tweaked and twisted science, the Communist Romania setting, and believable characters. The ending hopefully paves the way for a sequel.

VERDICT: Woodroe (Whisperwood) offers a haunting and propulsive treat in this survival horror story, whose read-alikes include The Mist and The Langoliers, both by Stephen King, and God’s Junk Drawer by Peter Clines."
