In the long arc, anything we ever do will eventually be just a story. New stories will settle on top of them, like sedimentary layers. I think we like to imagine future travellers will dig them up, put them in places of honour.

US joins Russia to vote against UN resolution condemning Russia’s war against Ukraine | CNN Politics The United States joined Russia to vote against a UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s war against Ukraine Monday in a stunning shift from years of US policy.

For the US to side with Russia and North Korea to oppose a UN resolution condemning the illegal invasion of Ukraine defies all common sense and adds insult to the countless injuries suffered by the brave Ukrainian people. edition.cnn.com/2025/02/24/p...

🫡🇺🇸 "Americans do not swear an oath to a king, a tyrant or a dictator. We swear an oath to the Constitution and the idea of America, for which we are willing to die," — Mark Milley

I’m encouraged by these town halls but I also remember very clearly how this happened in 2017 as well. Instead of responding to the complaints, they stopped doing them.

Myth: UBI will induce laziness.

Fact: Survival-driven work leads to burnout, whereas self-motivated work generates its own momentum.

UBI allows individuals to pursue work that aligns with their values, potentially reducing 'laziness' and boosting overall well-being.

ADRIENNE ADAMS
NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL SPEAKER
CITY HALL, NY, NY
Statement from Speaker Adrienne Adams on the Resignation of 4 Deputy Mayors and Calling on Mayor Adams to Resign
Feb. 17, 2025
With the resignation of deputy mayors, it has become clear that Mayor Adams has now lost the confidence and trust of his own staff, his colleagues in government, and New Yorkers. He now must prioritize New York City and New Yorkers, step aside and resign. This administration no longer has the ability to effectively govern with Eric Adams as mayor.
These resignations are the culmination of the mayor's actions and decisions that have led to months of instability and now compromise the City's sovereignty, threaten chaos, and risk harm to our families. There is too much at stake for our city and New Yorkers to allow this to continue.
We have endured enough scandal, selfishness and embarrassment, all of which distract from the leadership that New Yorkers deserve. This is the opposite of public service. Our city needs a leader totally committed to protecting New Yorkers and improving their lives.

UBI moves beyond economic labels. its not about capitalism, communism, socialism, liberalism, or any specific economic system. Instead, it acknowledges the inherent worth and dignity of every human being and provides the resources to enable one to live out their full potential.

The concentration of wealth among a select few hinders economic growth. An ideal economy would ensure that wealth is with those who contribute directly to its functioning, like workers, educators, and entrepreneurs. This is why we need UBI.

We are a group of trades unionists, academics, CEOs, NGOs and campaign organisations in fields impacted by automated decisions, such as Artificial Intelligence and profiling technologies; which is to say, nearly every area of our lives. We work on data policy, policing, children, racial justice, employment, health, and disability rights. We have academic expertise in the areas of AI ethics, Computing, Law and Human Rights, run tech companies, and represent workers with expertise in technology. We recognise that there are benefits to be gained from Artificial Intelligence. We also see that there are risks. Where we hope both we and the government can find consensus is that Artificial Intelligence technologies, in order to succeed, need to maintain the confidence of the public. The public must be able to trust the way that these technologies are employed.
Yet there are concerns. Data can be biased. Models can be wrong. The potential for discrimination and for deepening inequalities is known and significant. Important machine decisions can be wrong and unjust, and frequently Artificial Intelligence providers are unwilling or unable to address shortcomings. The core of the necessary public trust relies on accountability. Decisions, whether made by humans or machines, are sometimes incorrect. To this end, we are worried by the potential for measures in the Data (Use and Access) Bill to change the way that “Automated Decision Making” is governed under Article 22 UK GDPR. We respectfully ask that these clauses be reexamined to ensure that people are not simply subjected to life changing decisions made solely by machines. The debacle over A-level results when they were algorithmically assigned in 2020 is an example of the kind of automated decision which could be challenged by an individual under the current legal framework, but would not be open to challenge under the changes proposed. Hire and fire decisions by Uber have been successfully challenged in the Netherlands.

We respectfully ask that these clauses be reexamined to ensure that people are not simply subjected to life changing decisions made solely by machines, and forced to prove their innocence when machines get it wrong. The government should extend AI accountability, rather than reduce it, at this critical moment.

We currently have the right not to be subject to a legal or significant decision based solely on automated processing.

The Data Bill removes this right, requiring individuals to scrutinise and assert their rights against decisions made by AI.

"One of the great tragedies of mankind is that morality has been hijacked by religion. So now people assume that religion and morality have a necessary connection. But the basis of morality is really very simple and doesn't require religion at all."

How much should you worry about a collapse of the Atlantic conveyor belt? » Yale Climate Connections Scientists warned recently that the risk "has so far been greatly underestimated."

There's lively debate on whether and when a tipping point can be ID'd before collapse of the Atlantic Multidecadal Overturning Circulation (AMOC) — but dangerous weakening is expected whether or not a collapse occurs. Part 2 of our two-parter:
