Every term without a fault an undergrad tells me "I spent 2 hours on this problem and you identified it in under a minute", and every term without a fault I answer "it took me over a decade to identify it in under a minute"

Last time I checked on booktok against my will, the topic was "anything that isn't dialogue isn't important to read". So skipping the epilogue and prologue? Definitely progress.

Only thing worrying about this proportion is that it isn't 100%. Knowledge is our work. Our labor. We can't steal it. It's ours.

And DarwinCore! You can import DwC data from both a GBIF dataset and a local archive. That's also new. And cool!

Comparison of maxent and logistic models

Do you like Maxent? You can now use it within SpeciesDistributionToolkit.jl 🎉

We have also added a bunch of dataviz functions, including bivariate and value-suppressing maps. Oh, and conformal prediction for uncertainty quantification. And more coming soon.

Indeed, as rich nations widthdraw from global solidarity, anything that relies on their generosity is bound to fail

It's almost entirely linear with the exception of a few very obvious flashbacks, so it would probably work as an audiobook!

And now I'm off to some comfort fantasy book.

It's a masterpiece, from the first sentence to the last, and theres not a single bit that doesn't land. This book blew past all the very high expectations that were set by the massively positive reviews.

I couldn't sleep tonight, so I finished Chain-Gang All-Stars. A 5⭐ book without a doubt, but also a yoga read: you've got to breathe through it an inhabit the discomfort. The footnotes deliver some of the most brutal/touching character development, but also ground the fiction in our world.

I’ve had this debate in class with STEM students before. They NEED to believe that eugenics and scientific racism etc are things of the past and are ‘pseudosciences’ because ‘science is objective’ and the ‘scientific method defends from bias.’ It’s a dangerous way to think.

Thinking like a mountain in the age of AI Click on the article title to read more.

In a sea of opinions about the role of LLMs in academics I offer my own.

Apart from being harmful, exploitive plagiarism machines, LLMs rob us of the opportunity to experience the gift of friction in writing, which changes how we think.

We must not give away that gift.

Many journals require data and code sharing. Yet code is still rarely shared and datasets are often hard to reuse.

Our new paper introduces the @sortee.bsky.social guidelines for data & code quality control in ecology & evolution, developed by 26 experienced data editors.

The thing that's nice about this specific author team is, collectively, we have the reasoning skills of one full ecologist. Maybe more

that statement is true and also probably a little insulting to full ecologists everywhere

Start treating legends as information! This (work in progress) is a VSUP with model training points overlaid, and it shows that on the training dataset, most points are predicted with low uncertainty.
