Well you did a hell of a job connecting to things I knew too!

Through the rest of undergrad and grad school, I went on to take a lot of classes that I really enjoyed. But none of them resonated in quite the same way. So go listen to this anthem of oceanography and realize fetch has been a thing well before Mean Girls: m.youtube.com/watch?v=FuzT...

@jenbiddle.bsky.social is connecting fetch to songs I listened to as a kid (thanks mom and dad), referencing TV shows my kids love (Octonauts still slaps btw), and reassuring me the science (and my comparative grade) backed my note taking choices.

My first classes? Two semesters each of physics, organic chemistry, and calculus. Good lord it was hard. In every class I was the weird old guy w/ three kids, no computer, and taking notes in a notebook. Enter @jenbiddle.bsky.social‘s Intro to Marine Science (or something like that).

It wouldn't be overstating it to say this class was a core memory in my education journey. ~10 years earlier I had dropped out of school 90% of the way to a psychology degree. I had muddled through a mini-career as a financial advisor before going back to finish my undergrad at UD

I told my class how @lgpens.bsky.social once sat as a student in my class and has forever been scarred by my lectures of how the fetch of the Great Lakes creates large, dangerous waves.

Kids these days don't know about Lake Gitche Gumee.

Kids these days…

In their defense, I think I was the only person in my class familiar with the song about what happened when the gales of November came early!

Booo! They should just focus on the memories it would create.

And it was my absolute pleasure. So much fun (and hopefully helpful to them)!

@jenbiddle.bsky.social your MAST301 students were awesome and way ahead of where I was at that stage of my career! And I pushed operation #EdmundFitzgerald hard. Even included a YouTube link when I responded to their follow up emails 🌊🧪🎶🎤🎶

It would make a lot more sense if Gene ever shared an opinion on what the refs are reviewing

Can you #FindThatLizard?!

Juvenile western skinks, Plestiodon skiltonianus, have blue tails to deter predators. It seems counterintuitive. Why would you want to stand out as a way of defense?

In 2016, Japanese scientists published a study focusing on the Far Eastern skink, lestiodon latiscutatus.

I #FoundThatLizard thanks to that lovely blue tail!

You know I am 100% down for convincing them to do this. I’m going to try and convince them to get their friends who aren’t even in your class to do this!

I had my first @skypeascientist.bsky.social talk (session? chat? meeting?) today. Two third grade classes and it was AWESOME! The enthusiasm! And such fantastic questions! I just hope they weren’t too disappointed I haven’t caught a barracuda or a white shark or a swordfish 🧪🌊🐠

The only one I was confident on was cats! The other guesses were hard structure so I knew they couldn’t be right. But I was struggling to access the conservation part of my brain 😂

Imagine, the thing a large number of your constituents are loudly passionate about influences how (or if) they vote. Geniuses

Watching Mikaela Shiffrin win slalom gold by basically the same margin as the last seven golds combined just became my all time favorite sports moment. And then we get to hear that post race interview? We don’t deserve this but I’m happy we got it!

My youngest is having her first sleepover tonight. Four additional preteen girls in the house. Friends, these kids brought their band instruments and are recording themselves playing together for their band director
