New preprint is up!
Not going spoil the results for you 🤓 but we looked at some “bird” vs “bee”-pollinated Penstemon hybrid zones and came away with some pretty unexpected results!
It is not too late to donate. Contributions will help support a wonderful society and its awesome members! #ADayforBSA 🌱🌻🍄
I'm so thrilled that this paper is now out in American Journal of Botany! This paper marks a couple of exciting firsts for me - it is the first chapter of my dissertation and my first first-author publication 🎉. I hope folks enjoy reading it and become fans of personate flowers in Penstemon!
100% yes! Good luck 🌱
I've been making a series of videos called "What the FUNDING" that highlight all the incredible science that federal funding supports. If DOGE just fcked up your NSF grant and you wanna collaborate on a video, lmk? I'm @science_irl on insta & TT

Visual abstract: “we test hypotheses about floral diversity with community science data and an advanced computer vision model. Red/orange flowers have delayed flowering that matches hummingbird migratory patterns”
Hot off the presses and so so thrilled. Thanks to @inaturalist.bsky.social + computer vision we found something beautifully simple: Red and orange flowers bloom later than all the other colors in the eastern United States. Paper here: authors.elsevier.com/a/1kwzh3QW8S...

Had the opportunity to chat with In Defense of Plants about my favorite plant, Galax urceolata. We dive into its ecology, genome evolution, and the fascinating world of polyploidy. Check out this week’s episode:
Love making maps
Here are some samples from Penstemon newberryi x davidsonii hybrid zone at Virginia Lakes trail in the Sierras
Color = flower color!
The first chapter of my dissertation with @carriewessi.bsky.social is now available as a preprint!! Give it a read if you are interested in learning more about the evolutionary history of an EXTREMELY cool floral type called personate flowers!!
Okay, thank you! 🙂
Evolutionary genetics focussed friends!! Has anyone successfully applied for the NRSA F32 (postdoc level) fellowship in the past 3 years? Or perhaps do you know someone that has? Please feel free to send me a message if you are willing to share tips, advice, materials, etc. 😊 🌱Thanks in advance 🎉
Hey #Botany2024 stop by my talk tomorrow morning to FINALLY hear about what @carriewessi.bsky.social and I have learned about the genetic architecture of Penstemon’s personate flowers!! Tuesday - 8:30am- Development & Structure - Grand Gallery B
