This is a great use of AI

"AI scientists are building ever-larger models, and then claiming that each model can solve even more than the previous one.
Then, model in hand, they go around looking around for problems to solve"

Join us in beautiful Madison WI! In addition to the postdoc call I previously announced, I am seeking applicants for a Scientist position. IMO this position is best suited for someone who successfully completed their postdoctoral training, see here for more details: jobs.wisc.edu/jobs/scienti...
We are looking for a motivated Research Associate to join our lab and help us decode the immune system! If you have any questions please reach out! #science #immunology #STEMjobs

I never thought I'd find an online system that would make the user experience of eRACommons look good in comparison, but here we are.
If you are submitting an NIH grant in February, you will be required to use SciENcv to prepare you biosketch.
IT IS MUCH WORSE THAN YOU CAN POSSIBLY IMAGINE.
Set aside *at least* 4 hours just to transfer an existing an biosketch into SciENcv.
Grateful to share our paper on gene-specific selective sweeps in human gut microbiomes, now out in Nature! It has been a joy to work with @rwolff.bsky.social, whose insights and hard work made this possible.

Excited to share new work by Guli Agirman + co that identifies a direct mechanism linking gut microbial imidazole propionate to stress! 🧠🦠 Btw this image was made by Nano Banana Pro 🍌. First time I've gotten a model to accurately generate a science graphic 🤯 authors.elsevier.com/a/1mA5M6t8JE...
Paradigm shift is an over-used phrase, but that's what this really is with genetic manipulation of an unculturable bug. That changes microbiology.
Very excited to share our latest work in Science on metagenomic editing (MetaEdit) of the gut microbiome in vivo & directly modifying unculturable immune-modulatory SFB bug in the small intestine. 🦠🧬🛠️

Thanks for sharing. One reason old papers (pre-1980s) are more enjoyable to read is how expressive the language is. In my career, with maybe one exception, every paper I wrote has had its language sanitized, quotes removed, titles changed, and discussions hamstrung. I'm not sure to what end.
Fred Ramsdell, a UCLA alumnus and now Nobel Prize winner, poses in front of a shelf.
UCLA alumnus Fred Ramsdell received the @nobelprize.bsky.social today in Physiology or Medicine — our 17th Nobel Prize for an alum or faculty member, and the third prize in five years for a Bruin. ucla.in/4oaVlKd #nobelprize #academicsky 🧪
Happy to share this paper in final form rdcu.be/eH8tj, with more info on neuronal responses and potential mechanism of actions! The results suggest that there is neural interoception of microbial metabolic state 🧠🦠 We hope they can inspire more work in this area!
What might that other variable be? Well what makes people take acetaminophen for an extended period of time? Illness, infection, pain, lots of things correlate with use of these drugs.
1. There is increased risk observed with longterm exposure to acetaminophen.
2. But if you control using a sibling that was not exposed, the risk is the same for the unexposed and exposed siblings.
3. This suggests that the correlation is not due to acetaminophen exposure, but a different variable.
If you're a UCLA researcher (PI, grad student, etc) with an NSF, NIH or other suddenly suspended grant, please email or DM me.
I'm trying to confirm what the suspension letters say and how extensive the NIH suspensions are.
Email: Mikhail at calmatters dot org
Breaking: NSF is suspending roughly 300 grants with UCLA, following a DOJ finding on Tuesday that the university violated Title VI by "creating a hostile educational environment for Jewish and Israeli students."
This is an elegant solution and really useful analysis!
I am seeking a postdoc for my group at UCLA. We work at the intersection of population genetics x microbiome (garud.eeb.ucla.edu). If interested, please message me!
CCII's Vice Director, Sidonia Fagarasan, and the faculty of this year's RIKEN IMS-JSI Summer School & Symposium.
Sidonia spoke about the biochemical dialog between immune cells mediating anti-cancer responses

The Xue lab at UC Irvine is looking for a staff scientist to support our work investigating how microbes interact and evolve in the gut microbiome! Open to a wide range of previous experience levels, see ad for more.

”replication crisis” has always been hyperbole. Scientists ALWAYS argued, called each other frauds, and eventually land on consensus. A lot of what van Leeuwenhoek observed in the late 1600s was NOT REPRODUCIBLE because nobody could make lenses like him. But he was right, about cells, and bacteria.

Goin back to Cali. Find me at UCLA. I’m recruiting at all levels. You can learn more at our lab website: www.donaldsonlab.com

I try to always acknowledge her when presenting genetics work in Bacteroides: because all the tools came from her lab. She was working on this stuff steadily and productively for decades, at a time when very few people were thinking about mammalian gut microbiota.
Hi friends new and old! I study how microbes interact and evolve in complex communities like the human gut microbiome.🦠🧬💩 I'm thrilled to share that I'm starting a lab at UC Irvine in April 2025 and am recruiting at all levels - please spread the word! kxuelab.com More about my work below...🧵1/n
Very cool. I was skeptical this could work in a complex community but looks like I was proven wrong! Maybe I need to get back on the hybrid selection train.
