“…You come to room 1013 over at the hospital, I'll show you America. Terminal, crazy and mean. I live in America, that’s hard enough, I don’t have to love it. You do that. Everybody’s got to love something.”

~ Tony Kushner, Angels in America

I have no prank for today. And while I have one in mind, it won’t be until later in the future. So, it’s going to be premeditated.

That’s your only warning.

Remember when Ursula K. Le Guin savaged J.K. Rowling in a 2004 Guardian interview?

“I have no great opinion of [JK Rowling’s writing style]. When so many adult critics were carrying on about the “incredible originality” of the first Harry Potter book, I read it to find out what the fuss was about, and remained somewhat puzzled; it seemed a lively kid’s fantasy crossed with a ‘school novel’, good fare for its age group, but stylistically ordinary, imaginatively derivative, and ethically rather mean-spirited.”

Let’s not forget what Ursula K. Le Guin had to say about JKR and Harry Potter.

My life as a writer is mainly just finding endless hacks that trick my brain into writing.

Seriously, that damn thing throws up so many obstacles.

It’s a mostly sci-fi story with a splash of fantasy and the next book might be coming out later this year or early 2027, depends on the road map, official announcement to follow along with digital arcs!

When Terry Pratchett died it struck me that our door to the world inside his mind was forever closed. Other people could write Discworld books of course, but they would be their own interpretation - not bad but inherently different. I realised each human mind is a unique, limited resource

The play is Angels in America btw. Good stuff in there.

The fact that a play that has the quote “I wish I were an octopus...A FUCKING OCTOPUS!” is giving me some sort of comfort and helping me make sense during all of this better than any self help book is telling but not surprising.
