Uncovering everything from male bias to tidal foraging tricks and even a wild new tradition: interspecies abduction!
The Frans de Waal PhD Dissertation Prize will return next year to honour outstanding science in memory of #FransDeWaal.
Generously supported by @degruyterbrill.bsky.social.

🎉 The winner of the 2nd Frans de Waal PhD Dissertation Prize is the brilliant @zoegoldsborough.bsky.social. Congratulations!
Her 2025 thesis “Cracking Capuchins” dives deep into how tool use shapes survival and evolution. Some capuchins wield stones like pros, others don’t.
And follow-up plans were hatched...
Greetings from Het Pesthuis (the Plague House) in Leiden, where Suzanne Mekking and I thoroughly enjoyed the @ehbea2026.bsky.social! Thanks to Mariska Kret, our dedicated #Behaviour EiC, for inviting us to this event. Delighted that @degruyterbrill.bsky.social sponsored this conference in Leiden!
Pilot study (Vietnam): fermented milk with LcS improved #Constipation & #Gut #Microbiota over 4 weeks. More frequent, softer stools, fewer constipation symptoms, #Microbiome shifts. Well tolerated.

A close colleague of Frans de Waal, she shared a personal early email exchange (1st photo below). The lecture series (following @zannaclay.bsky.social’s 2025 talk) honours his legacy. Elisabetta Palagi, based at the University of Pisa, studies play, empathy and communication.
Elisabetta Palagi took to the stage at #CBEN2026 in Leiden to deliver the Frans de Waal Honorary Lecture: “Inseparable Threads: The Evolutionary Roots of Social Connection.”

To honour his legacy, #Behaviour is now accepting submissions for its 2nd Frans de Waal special issue. This issue will feature the Frans de Waal PhD Prize winner and a contribution from Elisabetta Palagi.
Submit by 1 Jun 2026 for publication in Jan 2027 (#OpenAccess). Help build on his legacy.
Few scientists have shaped our understanding of behaviour as profoundly as Frans de Waal. From empathy in primates to the evolutionary origins of kindness and fairness, his research revolutionised discussions on animal intelligence and social behaviour.

A new #OpenAccess #Review article highlights the need for more balanced research into all four distinct #Giraffe species, in order to guide effective #Conservation efforts across #Africa.
The deeper-water palaemonid #Shrimp Bathymenes aleator has been recorded in New Zealand waters for the very first time – an exciting addition to the region’s known #MarineBiodiversity. 🌊🦐

Dorsal, lateral, and ventral view of the skin of Lutreolina massoia from Peru (MUSM 11647). Scale bar = 50 mm.
New research published in Mammalia reports the first Peruvian record of Massoia’s Water Opossum (Lutreolina massoia), originally misidentified as Lutreolina crassicaudata.

Visual comparison of the yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L) drying process using different types of covers of solar dryers.
Did you know that something as simple as the cover material in solar dryers can significantly affect the quality of dried yellow mealworms? 🐛☀️
Researchers tested different solar dryer designs, with glass-covered ones performing the best.
What if signals feel different to the sender than to the audience? This could challenge notions of “honest signalling” and highlight more self-directed, experiential communication. A small finding with potentially big implications.

Still images from Video 4 in the supplementary material of the article, filmed by a team from Wildstar Films, show Mike beginning to build up to a display outside the baobab before entering the hollow baobab for the climax of the display.
Fascinating insight into animal communication 🐒🌳🔊 Chimpanzees from Fongoli, Senegal have been observed entering hollow baobab trees to perform acoustic displays. From outside, the sounds appear muted – but inside, they may be amplified and transformed for the performer.

It explores the evolution of empathy, primate culture and conservation – alongside personal reflections.
A unifying message: bridging disciplines, species, and developmental stages is key to understanding behaviour. A fitting tribute and an inspiration for #Cognition research.
