Join us in Galway for our 4th Behavioural Insights & AMR Workshop
π
21β22 May 2026 | π University of Galway
Weβll be bringing together experts to discuss how behavioural science can help tackle antimicrobial resistance!

π’ New in OFID!
Many adults β₯65yrs have harmless bacteria in their urine (ASB) often misdiagnosed as a UTI β© harmful antibiotic use.
We found US adults β₯65 given an educational leaflet were more comfortable avoiding antibiotics for ASB & less likely to mistake ASB for UTI! π doi.org/10.1093/ofid...
Happening today! Please join us 5:15 pm in person in Room 448 (UCL EP, 26 Bedford Way). Full details on our website. All welcome!
Tomorrow marks the start of π World AMR Awareness Week 2025! Weβll be sharing insights from our AMR research as psychologists at @univie.ac.at @ipb.bsky.social @unierfurt.bsky.social and BNITM. Like/share this post for updates throughout the week! #AMR #WorldAMRAwarenessWeek #WAAW2025
Our new research shows that explaining the nature of illness and providing point-of-care test results to patients might be just quite useful tools to calibrate their antibiotic expectations (changing threshold but also discernment)... #antibiotic @abc-network.bsky.social @essexuni.bsky.social
I had an interesting 2nd day at #ICBM2025 in Vienna today. In our session, I presented our work on communicating about #AMR and pudent antibiotic use when new antibiotics are developed.
Please visit @abc-network.bsky.social if you are interested in the emerging field of behavioral research and AMR.

An inspiring keynote by @aliciad3.medsky.social at our Behavioral Insights and AMR workshop about how behavioral science can contribute to amr stewardship
Great conference in #Vienna last week thanks to @abc-network.bsky.social!

@evakrockow.bsky.social kick-starting the workshop on Behavioral insights and AMR with her talk about AMR risk communication... we need to communicate about AMR better.
Finally I get to meet @cortneyprice.bsky.social in person! Inspiring and hugely engaging talk on behavioural science in #AMR, touching on experiential strategies for policy influence.
Thought provoking keynote from @cortneyprice.bsky.social about how behavioral scientists should approach and influence policy makers
Excited to be in Vienna for this year's Behavioural Insights & Antimicrobial Resistance Workshop by the ABC network. Looking forward to a stimulating day and interesting discussions! Thanks for hosting us,

I'm Zooming to Vienna from the U.S. for the 3rd #BehaviouralInsights & #AntimicrobialResistance Workshop.
Kudos to @abc-network.bsky.social for sustainable international conferencing!
I'll share highlights (even if I need to sleep through sessions starting at 3:30 AM my time π
).
Great program! π
Excellent talk by @miroslavsirota.bsky.social arguing that 'wicked learning environments' create misguided intuitions and expectations about antibiotics.
Get ready for #SMDM25 in Ann Arbor! π Alistair Thorpe presents 16 June 9:15 am on what US adults w/ self-reported antibiotic allergies think about delabeling.
He's also looking forward to clinician cross talk, and reconnecting with colleagues!

Super excited to share key findings from our study in JAMA NO!
Freq abx users (β₯3 in 12mo) more likely to report:
-wanting abx for an URI π
-Needing help w/health-related materials π
-Medical maximizing (prefer to act vs watch/wait) π
-Disbelief in science π«π¬

A close-up microscopic image shows bacteria in shades of purple and brown on a textured gray surface. White text in bold reads βAntimicrobial resistance,β with βA GLOBAL THREATβ underneath. The UN Environment Programme logo is in the top right corner.
π¬ What is antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and why does it matter?
AMR occurs when microorganisms become resistant to treatments, posing a major threat to global health and the environment. Its impacts, causes, and the need for a #OneHealth approach: www.unep.org/topics/chemi...
Hugely important work led by Dr. Emily Spivak on the environmental impact of unnecessary antibiotic prescribing in the US: ~66 million unnecessary prescriptions in 2022 estimated to have produced the CO2 equivalent of driving a car around the earth ~194 times! #AMR #AMS

Figure 3. Effects of the infographics on wanting antibiotics (top), realizing an upper respiratory infection is probably not bacterial (middle), and realizing that β in such circumstances β one probably does not need antibiotics (bottom) for Experiment 1 (left) and replication Experiment 2 (right) with 95% confidence intervals.
Figures 4. Effects of the infographic and text message on asking for antibiotics (top), trying over-the-counter medication instead ntibiotics (middle), and trust in a doctor who offered antibiotics that were probably unnecessary (bottom) in Experiment 1 (left) and replication Experiment 2 (right) with 95% confidence intervals.
Our latest preprint validated low-cost #globalRisk reduction stimuli.
An infographic and text message improved #antibiotic decisions in ways that may reduce existential risks of #AntimicrobialResistance.
