It was a huge pleasure to meet my Irish All In counterpart Rosaleen McDonagh in Dublin and to hear her describe @allin.online as a "structural challenge to the cultural sector" in a noteworthy speech which The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon has published artscouncil.ie/news/dr-rosa...
In my new piece for Arts Professional I reflect on why the culture sector needs a working benefits system for disabled creatives

With disabled people being nine times more likely to struggle booking tickets & securing accessible seating, my new piece for Arts Professional explores how the cultural sector risks becoming complacent on inclusion

Visit the new #TakingThePIP website to view the open letter and learn how you can join the campaign to halt the Government's proposed disability benefit cuts takingthepip.co.uk
Underscoring the anger felt by disabled people across the creative industries at the proposed disability benefit cuts, I was proud to add my name to the new campaign launched today by disabled film & tv stars organised by Cherylee Houston demanding that the Government stop #TakingThePIP
Signed.
It cannot be right that talented disabled people like Jess Thom is forced to withdraw from work due to changes in state benefits that exist to support disabled people into work.
The proposed changes to the benefits system risk all the progress disabled creatives have made in the last decade.
After 8 years as a National Council member of Arts Council England my term concludes later this year.

New study reveals that 41% of disabled respondents reported barriers preventing them from visiting heritage sites.
Unsurprising, if like me, you are disabled & interested in heritage. I hope Historic England will find interest in the work the UK & Irish Arts Councils have developed - @allin.online

Out and about again celebrating the UK's incredible off-screen talent at last night's BAFTA Television Craft Awards where it was great to see disabled talent represented across the nominations, winners and presenters
Proud to add my name to this open letter from National and Area Council members of Arts Council England who believe passionately in the importance of public funding for culture and the #LetsCreate strategy
In complete agreement with Darren Henley as he rejects hierarchies in art, "We must not allow our world to be characterised as a pointy triangle with excellence on high & access and community at the base. This framing is skewed & it risks killing the very thing its proponents love - great art."
Disabled audiences are nine times more likely struggle with online booking to attend arts events!
Yes. NINE times!!
Roll on @allin.online !

Disabled people were 11 times more likely to die from #Covid & made up 2/3 of the final UK death toll @150,000 individuals. This was not a pattern shared in other Western nations.
Disabled people are not vulnerable, but we were made so by the UK's disastrous approach to Covid

This new report from @artscouncilengland.bsky.social demonstrates that the creative & cultural sector is far more representative than it was a decade ago.
I am proud of the commitment of the cultural sector, and the determination of the Arts Council, to achieve this major step change.
