In The Summer Hikaru Died, the village is as alive as a character. Not only a setting where events happen, it does things and things are done to it. A web of interconnections, it's defined by its events/acts to which characters react. It's anti-randomness; each scene and feature is part of meaning.

The Summer Hikaru Died involves a lot of piercing, breaking or entering into, which is either a violation or consensual. The former is an infestation, as from an 'impurity' or a virus, which adulterates and can prove fatal. The latter is a merging or 'mixing', a last-resort attachment or intimacy.
