Hey it's #IndieDrop 🪂
4 things about my game GRINDWORM:
1. It's NOT about a worm.
2. It's about digging a REALLY big hole.
3. Powered by advanced Hole Technology™ (featuring physically INACCURATE cube-marched soil)!
4. It desperately needs your love ❤️

This tiny C# snippet confuses a lot of developers.

Can you figure out the output without using an IDE?

A) foobar
B) barfoo
C) both
D) invalid code

No running the code. Reply with A, B, C or D.

Ahh... rendering a drinking glass is so much fun... and at the same time so much work just for a sip of water. 🥤
So happy we have opaque materials in real life. I'd hate to die of thirst while the glass shader still compiles!

Yep, the hype around AI is crazy right now. Companies are trying to shove AI into everything, but we can't do much about it. The only thing we can do is vote with our wallets.

The limitations are still there. They're just hidden behind ultra-detailed assets and cinematography.

I'm not an expert :D, but ray tracing is still far from perfect. You may have noticed that most modern games don't have proper mirrors, and environments are often less interactive/destructible than they were 15 years ago. On top of that, many games are only really playable with DLSS enabled.

There are still a lot of limitations in computer graphics, tho. But I agree that there are pros and cons to what we have nowadays. I hated the UE5 marketing that made it sound like game development is suddenly super easy - just turn on Lumen and Nanite. Result: a bunch of unoptimized buggy games.

No problem! As you can see, I'm not quick to reply either :D Yes, the more limits you have, the more creative you become. You don't invent "fast inverse square root" when your engine and PC can easily handle millions of operations per frame.

In reality, almost any modern engine can achieve nearly any visual style with enough customization and strong art direction.

1 month ago 1 0 1 0

Absolutely! There aren't really "good" or "bad" engines like many people think. The main reason stereotypes like "the Unreal look" or "the Unity look" exist is that many developers rely on default settings or generic asset store templates.

Sometimes happy little accidents just happen during development.
For example, when you accidentally place a fake additive light inside an object - and suddenly you get a subsurface scattering effect. Doesn't it look cool? 🎨

Nobody asked for this game… Wrong. Doctor Strange checked 14,000,605 alternate futures, and the only one where we win is the one where I make this game.
