I’ve only done the orbs with warblers, but I’ve done variations on the blocks with other birds.

If you're a conference organizer looking for ways to engage your attendees, turn to art! Scientists show so much creativity in their presentations, and providing outlets for expressing that creativity is a great way to have people connect with each other and relax during the conference.

Hey you! I am still on the market for jobs this fall! I am an entomologist who specializes in inclusive biology teaching (15+ semesters of collegiate instruction) and a broad array of research skills spanning collection & ID, molecular work (RNAi, Genomics), and phenotyping (behavior, physiology)🧪

If you missed tonight’s bird-themed show that was literally about sexual dimorphism, cladistics, and ducks, (and Nicola Tesla’s pigeon affairs) you can check out another Philly show this week!
Thanks to @darksideburlesque.bsky.social I can now say that an audience was educated on 3/4 of my dissertation topics at a drag/burlesque show
HEY did you know that if you have ADHD you can get a free lifetime pass to our national parks?! Just need your psychiatrist to sign off on it. Holy mackerel how has no one told me this before.

@adriftlab.bsky.social has never had government funding. What we have had - for nearly two decades - is a small group of deeply committed people, long-term datasets, and a community who makes it possible.
Our website now celebrates that out loud. 🔗 adriftlab.org

I love when new versions of the Eukaryotic tree come out, just casually reorganizing our understanding of the diversity of life.
I may study birds but showing students how incredibly animal/vertebrate-centric our understanding of biodiversity is has to be one of my absolute favorite things.
Three panel comic. Panel 1: at a house party, a guy is standing next to his buddy, a human-size horseshoe crab. They’re both holding red solo cups. The guy is looking to the other side of the room and excitedly says to the crab, “hey, there’s another horseshoe crab here!” The crab replies, “ugh.” Panel 2: the guy says, “what’s wrong?” The crab says, “he’s one of those guys who flaunts it too much.” Panel 3: we see the other horseshoe crab in question, engaged in conversation with a group of smiling people standing around him. This second horseshoe crab is wearing a cap with a horseshoe on it, and a novelty t-shirt that reads: I SURVIVED 5 MASS EXTINCTIONS. IS IT FRIDAY YET?
Maybe not the best phylogeny to use to explain homology. So this pair o' logs are orthologs, but if they arose via duplication and you can recover synteny for one, you could call it a syntelog and the other single log a paralog."
A four-panel comic. In panel 1, two people are standing in the forest, wearing backpacks. The red-haired person says "I've never hiked with a naturalist before! I'm excited. I hope I brought enough water." The brown-haired person says "I'm sure you did. Let's go!" In panel 2, the brown-haired person points at various nature features. "Look, a red eft! It's the teenaged form of the Eastern Newt. Ooh, wintergreen! Wanna smell it? I hear a Chestnut-sided Warbler. Glacial till. Rubble of the last ice age!" In panel 3, the naturalist points to more nature items. "This forest seems early successional. Aw, a leafcutter bee with a piece of leaf! Wow, deer poor! Wow, fungi growing out of the deer poop!!" The red-haired person says "Okay, but..." In panel 4, the red-haired person continues, "It's been an hour and we've walked three feet." The brown-haired person exclaims, looking excited, "Three amazing feet!"
Sometimes you make a new comic, and sometimes you redraw an old one because you lost the original high res file 😅

My latest for @sciam.bsky.social is all about the real biology, ecology, and climate science that is used to create the world of Pokémon, and how scientists use it to teach science in the real world.
This is just about the most fun I’ve ever had interviewing anyone, and I hope you enjoy! 🧪🌎
A tree sparrow is speaking: "Artistic creation shouldn't be considered carelessly! Good art is made deliberately! With emotion! Physical exertion! If you aren't crying or bleeding by the end, you'd better look into another lifestyle...". We see a class of birds with piles of sticks and a big banner that reads "Intro to nest building" made out of twigs. The teacher continues: "Ok! Does everyone have their bundle of soft moss?"

Names matter: the word ‘citizen’ carries legal, political, and cultural meanings that are not neutral, say @britishecologicalsociety.org. Instead, consider using the term ‘community science’.
Of all the important things going on in the world, I think talking a bit more about birds is just fine 🦉🧪

For today's #BirdoftheDay theme #manmadeperch, here's a Belted Kingfisher perched on the head of a wooden maybe cormorant. I took this from a moving boat in Seattle and had no idea what I was looking at other than there was something roughly Kingfisher-shaped involved! 😆 #birds #nature #photography
