Diplostyla concolor, a lovely dwarf spider from Central Finland. I caught this mini-beast by sifting leaf litter.

I find the name “concolor” funny since it literally means “all one color”. However, the front part (prosoma) and rear part (opisthosoma) have different colors…

Japanese orchard spider Leucauge blanda.

These guys weave a horizontal web and hunt beneath it, hanging upside down. That’s why they are easily confused with sheet-web weavers of family Linyphiidae, although they actually represent family #tetragnathidae

Pardosa laevitarsis from Naha, Okinawa, Japan. There were plenty of these guys frolicking in a city park.

In Finland, where I live, we have P. lugubris running around every yard and garden. I guess I found the subtropical equivalent of our beloved “lugu”!

Cyclosa mulmeinensis, the spider inspired by camels.🐫

No, just kidding! Orb-web weavers existed much before camels. So it must be the camels who borrowed from C. mulmeinensis the cool idea of sporting two humps in the back.

Pachygnatha listeri female from Central Finland. Literally, “pachygnatha” means thick jaws, and you can see why in the second photo. Named after naturalist Martin Lister (1639–1712), P. listeri likes to live in the low vegetation of damp forest areas. #tetragnathidae #spidersky

This Monday’s arachnid is Piratula hygrophila, a wolf spider that “loves water” by name. Indeed, this species thrives in wet and damp ground level habitats. #lycosidae #spidermacro

Harrastajan matematiikka YouTube video by Samun tiedekanava

Viime vuonna päätin uudistaa yleistajuisia matikkaesityksiäni niin, etteivät ne tuntuisi luennolta tai oppitunnilta.

Meiju Paxin kanssa käsikirjoitimme show’n ”Harrastajan matematiikka”.

Tervetuloa YouTubeen katsomaan aivan uudenlaista tiedeviestintää!

Yellow-legged wolf spider Pardosa fulvipes.

These nimble buggers prefer Eastern Europe: they have never been found west of Germany and Italy. At my summer cottage in Central Finland P. fulvipes are plentiful. #lycosidae #spidermacro

Bathyphantes nigrinus, tiny spider from leaf litter.

“Bathys” means deep in Greek, and “phantes” refers to appearing. In a bit of a mystical way since both “phantom” and “fantasy” arise from that word.

So Bathyphantes spiders emerge from the deep. #linyphiidae #spidermacro

Uloborus plumipes: spider without venom.

Usually spiders kill their prey by injecting venom with fangs. But some species wrap an insect with super tangled silk into a tight package and cover it with digestive fluid. After a while the soup is ready.

Athens, Greece. #uloboridae
