New study from @ivanzheng.bsky.social and colleagues in the Dang lab @ragoninstitute.bsky.social reveals a spatial TH2-STAT6 immune checkpoint in pulmonary #granulomas that suppresses extracellular clearance of #Cryptococcus, promoting persistent infection. rupress.org/jem/article/...

Very informative post from Elizabeth Ginexi about NIH grant delays.

I have a position open for a Research Associate - Postbac opportunity.
For those with curiosity and tenacity, a chance to delve deeply into a project, learn new techniques, and publish papers, all in a friendly environment.
Suited for recent college (BS) grads with prior relevant experience.
Multiyear funding is an intentional scheme by Russ Vought to follow the letter of the appropriations law while still absolutely devastating American scientific leadership
American science is shrinking.
A Post analysis found that, halfway through this fiscal year, the number of competitive grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health is down by more than half compared with the same period last year. https://wapo.st/3OgoHKV
Now I understand the condition of some deliveries..
Nice. Reminds me of the CCA adding enzyme that modifies tRNA 3’ ends and pUGylation enzymes that add poly UG tails to RMAs in C. elegans.
Today, Russel Vought appeared in front of the House Budget Committee to defend the proposed cuts to the #NIH & others. He justifies cuts to cancer, Alzheimer’s research etc. & spreads lies about the origins of Covid.
FYI: The NIH budget is less than 1% of federal budget.

Roughly half of STEM PhD students in the U.S. are international students.
75% of them stay in the U.S. long term after graduating to contribute their skills to U.S. scientific research and development.
Cutting international student visas hurts U.S. science now and long into the future.
Science is good. We should fund it.
Devastating to learn of Greg Hannon's passing, who made several seminal discoveries in the field of RNA. What a loss.

I think many of us thought of writing a piece like this given what's happening, but you stated the issues perfectly. I especially like the section about one person's GOF is another's LOF. And I love that you started with Muller.
Required reading for any student of genetics. A lucid and thoughtful piece on term that is far from unambiguous. I encourage sharing widely.

Nice day for a ride!
PIs/group leaders, what was the most important aspect of the first paper your lab published
1️⃣ Establishing the lab's identity
2️⃣ Communicating an important discovery
3️⃣ Completing a project started as a postdoc

Sad indeed.
I’m likely overly touchy about the correctness of snRNAs-snRNA interaction for personal reasons (many hours in the lab).
Indeed there seem to be many ways to screw up neurons. Unlikely that the genetics of non-null mutations will lead to pathways and understanding. Clearly some cell types are more sensitive to certain hypomorphs — eg RP and spliceosome mutations, but doesn’t help us understand photoreceptors..
Interesting paper on U2 snRNA mutations in a human disease. Unfortunate that they show an egregiously incorrect structure of the U2-U6 spliceosomal complex (Extended Data Figure 4), which is used to interpret the molecular impact of the mutations.

"China’s population is four times the size of America’s, and its culture is unabashedly pro-science, even relative to other developed countries." 🧪
To distract myself, I updated our lab website with pictures of new folks. Some other photos are also updated. Check it out at madhanilab.ucsf.edu
everything is fine
why do you ask
Misuse of the term. But what do I know—I’m just the next co-chair of the Epigenetics GRC…
Congratulations to my @UCSF colleague Geeta Narlikar and my grad school classmate Abby Dernberg on this well-deserved honor (and everyone else too)! It’s good to have something to celebrate in these challenging times.
Another banger from my UCSF/Genentech Hall colleagues Yifan Cheng and David Julius!

The front page of the https://reporter.nih.gov website with funding curves of showing the number of awards and dollar amount by month.
Well, this is a surprise...
This is the landing page for NIH Reporter.
Those curves are new and look vaguely familiar...
I guess imitation is the greatest form of flattery (or NIH_leadership™ doesn't want reporters getting their data from a deranged activist).
