A study in the United States found a dramatic 22% decline in butterfly populations between 2000 and 2020.
To put it in context, “for someone who was born in 2000, one out of every five butterflies had disappeared by the time they became an adult,” said Collin Edwards, lead author of the study.

Priests in Bali manage an ancient system of sustainable rice farming
This 'religious technology' ensures there’s a balance of wet & dry fields so pests can’t spread
They set planting, harvesting, flooding & fallow cycles to manage bugs & water sharing issues, @mongabay.bsky.social reports:
Just about a year ago I wrote about the toxic water crisis in Texas and included this quote:
“If they ruin the water out here, there won’t be anyone left. This will be a desert with no inhabitants,” he said from his dining room table. “It’s only a matter of time.”
Times up!
I was teaching a course in Borneo and I came across my students wading in the river where we told them it wasn’t safe. I reminded them that two people were eaten in that exact spot last week. That finally motivated them to listen to the rules!
🚨 Weather Forecasts Are Already Being Compromised 🚨
Former NOAA Administrator Dr. Rick Spinrad revealed that forecasters at the Dallas-Fort Worth office were unable to warn of recent tornadoes in West Texas because “the people who did that had been fired.” #SaveNOAA
“But Accu-Weather!!” They get their data from NWS. “But my local TV station has their own radar on a truck!” Sure, and they use it to fill small geographic gaps in the broader radar coverage that’s provided by NWS. “My weather app!” It’s getting its data from NWS.
Spent some time #birding in Port Aransas, TX last weekend and saw these pretty birds at the Leonabelle Birding Center. I’m terrible at ID-ing shorebirds… Can anyone tell if these are Long-billed Dowitchers or something else?
Finally got a copy of Finspan from my local game store!! @whysharksmatter.bsky.social you ready to play? 😅
The kindest welcome gift in my hotel room from the mayor’s office in Suncheon Bay. This city LOVES cranes!
I was trained as a 'naturalist,' it got me my 1st jobs after college
So it was cool to interview probably the best naturalist guide in the Galápagos about #conservation & #ecotourism trends
Our @mongabay.bsky.social group spent 4 days w/ him on a locally-owned dive ship, incredible people & place:
@cskarnulis.bsky.social I agree starter packs are the best! Did you find this one yet? go.bsky.app/Erp27d1
Like I do not want to seem like I do not care about the large cats that died at the sanctuary. It's a tragedy. But please look at these numbers - this isn't even a fraction of the toll in wild animals. And this figure is from March 2024.
Shockingly few people are talking about the toxic air and water in LA.
It’s eerily reminiscent of early days of the pandemic when we were assured we didn’t have to mask
Listen to air quality experts. The same folk educating about IAQ & COVID are providing life saving info now.
And wear a mask.
Equally, it’s near impossible to describe the feeling when these orphans accept you into the family & take a bottle of milk. The 24-hour care needed to provide for these traumatized babies is intense & I’m so thankful to get to work alongside dedicated people like Akanyang and the entire EH team.
One of the Dallas Zoo conservation projects I work on is with an elephant orphanage in Botswana, called Elephant Havens. It’s so difficult to describe the depth of love each staff member of EH has for these amazing orphaned elephants, who range from a couple months old to 5-ish years old. 🐘
This is interesting! In Texas, one can buy giraffe leather boots, hats, wallets, etc. If I am reading the ESA's 4(d) rule correctly, those sales would have to stop, no?
"Conservation" efforts have been used to dispossess indigenous and other marginalized people of their land everywhere from Appalachia and the American West to Palestine and East Africa
*Always* be wary of conservation projects that act like people don't exist in a place
Congratulations!!! I remember you talking about this years ago on Twitter. Stoked to see all that hard work find a happy result!
Looking forward to sharing all about our work and learning from all of you and your efforts. Hoping to find a community here like I had back in the day on the bird app!
We work in projects and partnerships across 23 countries, in everything from rewilding & habitat restoration to anti-wildlife trafficking, climate resiliency, food security, and more.
I’m so proud though, that a huge focus of our One Health efforts are in our Dallas neighborhood of Oak Cliff.
I’m terrible at social media, but excited to be here meeting all of you!
I’m the Senior Director of Conservation at the Dallas Zoo, where I’m proud to have helped develop a really holistic program focused on community-driven conservation efforts.
Holy cow, I missed the notifications for this message so long ago!!! I had been in the field in Costa Rica and totally missed this. Thank you for the kind welcome! This already feels like the good place! 🥰
New polling data show rising bipartisan support for conservation — & even climate action — ahead of the US election
87% say presidential candidates' commitment to #conservation is impt, which includes 82% of Republicans — a 14% increase from 2020
“These increases are stunning" a new op-ed argues:
