I was almost robbed of my love for chemistry – but I fought my way back An abusive lab member made my dream course a nightmare. By speaking up, I'm reclaiming my joy

Writing anonymously for Chemistry World, a chemistry student relates the harm done to them by an academic bully – and how speaking up about it is rebuilding their confidence and desire to be the kind of mentor they never had.

And here we are! Literally every spine point is paying less in real terms than it was back in 2008. Spine point 5 (now replaced by the real living wage) is down by about 3.4%. By spine point 10, we're down over 10%. By spine point 23, over 20%, ultimately reaching a 22.1% reduction. 3/3

I know there's a lot happening today, but this is sneaking in under the radar. This proposed new rule would absolutely crush foreign PhD students, potentially making it impossible for them to enroll with any certainty of their ability to finish www.politico.com/news/2025/08...

Chemistry ‘cold spots’ emerging across the UK, RSC warns Some regions face a future with fewer chemists

University chemistry departments & course closures in the UK is leading to the emergence of ‘cold spots’ - areas where the subject cannot be studied within a reasonable travel time - says @rsc.org. Students from lower SE backgrounds could be affected the most: www.chemistryworld.com/news/chemist...

What the smell of benzene tells us about the world A philosophical discussion about how much we can trust our senses

Michael Faraday initially characterised the liquid we now know as benzene as smelling of oil gas and almonds. Sense perception in chemistry can be integral to the scientific process, but in philosophy, senses are essentially treated as untrustworthy. #ChemSky #ScienceSky

Safety is everyone’s responsibility Maintaining culture and investment is key, especially in the absence of incidents

UK chemicals industry has learned some lessons from the past & now sees relatively few serious incidents. But when incidents are rare, investment in safety is an easy target for budget cuts, whose impact may not be seen for years, but could be catastrophic. www.chemistryworld.com/opinion/safe...

A few countries have laws that allow menstruating employees to take time off to manage their symptoms. While there are potential pitfalls to be wary of, overall I think that menstrual leave should be more widely adopted ⬇️
