1/5. Orbán pioneered a model whereby oligarchs trade the fascist memes and electoral tricks they use to stay in power. He made Budapest a node between Moscow and Washington of the international far right.

I'm old enough to remember the hundreds of times over the past seven years when people excoriated me for writing articles and giving interviews describing Trump as a malignant narcissist potentially on par with some of the worst figures in history, like Hitler and Stalin and Saddam and the like.

Forget birdwatching, I’m into moth-watching: they’re fascinating and misunderstood insects | Helen Pilcher According to new research, distinguishing between the UK’s 2,500 species could halt cognitive decline – so my brain could not be happier, or healthier, says science writer Helen Pilcher

"...learning to tell a chiffchaff from a willow warbler could help us to stay mentally sharp as we age. But what about discerning a common quaker from a clouded drab? Or a brown-line bright-eye from a bright-line brown eye?"

I've mislaid my thermometer, so don't know exactly, but it's certainly a little milder than it has been of late. Nice & cloudy too, so am hoping for an NFY tomorrow 🤞

In all the coverage of Trump’s tirades about Europeans it should be noted that they are dealing with a much longer, harder, bigger and more consequential war in their own backyard, in Ukraine – a war that they didn’t choose, and one that Trump’s war on Iran has made worse by enriching Russia.

Fabulous photo, though. I dug our pond about 4 years ago now. We had frogspawn in its first spring (which was mysteriously eaten) but nothing since. A male purred away in the pond for a few nights the following year but to no avail.

The Preschool Teaching Assistant Shot by Border Patrol, Then Called a “Domestic Terrorist” When Marimar Martinez was shot five times by a Border Patrol agent, the D.H.S. justified it by calling her a “domestic terrorist.” In the aftermath, she’s been trying to recover her reputation and, with it, a sense of reality.

Charles Exum, the Border Patrol agent who shot Marimar Martinez five times, texted a group chat with fellow agents a few days after the shooting. “I fired 5 rounds and she had 7 holes. Put that in your book boys,” he wrote. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/2Gq1Fq
